Does the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire Offer a Multidimensional Measurement of the Alexithymia Construct
The Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ) was developed to assess alexithymia as a multidimensional construct consistent with the attention-appraisal model. This study evaluated the hierarchical structure of the PAQ using Goldberg's bass-ackwards method across student and community samples. Results consistently revealed a general alexithymia factor at the highest level of the hierarchy, with limited evidence of stable or distinct dimensions at th…
Examining the Incremental Validity of the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ) Relative to the 20-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20)
The 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) is the most widely used instrument for assessing alexithymia, with more than 25 years of research supporting its reliability and validity. The items that compose this scale were written to operationalize the components of the construct that are based on clinical observations of patients and thought to reflect deficits in the cognitive processing of emotions. The Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ) …

Creativity and Perversion
Although there is an extensive psychoanalytic literature on perversion, and numerous articles about creativity, few authors have explored relations between creativity and perversion. In particular, the role of childhood trauma and its impact on object relations has not been examined in patients with perversions whose creativity is blocked. In association with preoedipal anxieties and fantasies, childhood trauma can not only contribute to the deve…
Psychoanalysis and Empirical Research
An extensive body of research on the alexithymia construct is reviewed to show how various empirical methodologies can be used to evaluate the validity and increase our understanding of theoretical and clinically derived psychoanalytic concepts. The historical background of alexithymia and the theoretical framework in which the construct was formulated are presented, after which measurement- and experiment-based approaches to construct validation…

Toward the Development of a New Self-Report Alexithymia Scale
Addressing methodological problems in the development of existing scales for measuring alexithymia, this study reports the development of a new self-report scale. The Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS) was devised with concern for theoretical congruence with the alexithymia construct, independence of social desirability response bias, and internal consistency. Initially, 41 items were administered to 542 college students. Twenty-six items meeting pr…

New Trends in Alexithymia Research
Research investigating the alexithymia construct is advancing rapidly and has broadened considerably in recent years as a result of interdisciplinary efforts, new methodologies, and experimental techniques. New developments in the field include a shift from measurement-based validational studies to experimental investigations, which explore the relation between alexithymia and various aspects of emotional processing; the use of functional brain i…

Alexithymia as Predictor of Treatment Outcome in Patients with Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
OBJECTIVE: A previous study found a strong association between alexithymia and functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID). The objective of this study was to investigate whether alexithymia might be a predictor of treatment outcome in patients with FGID. METHODS: A group of FGID outpatients classified by the 'Rome I' criteria was divided into improved (N= 68) and unimproved (N= 44) groups on the basis of pre-established criteria after 6 months …
Somatization and Conversion
The terms somatization and conversion are used descriptively to define specific diagnostic entities, and phenomenologically to denote pathologic processes that underlie somatic symptom formation. There is a lack of clarity, and even controversy, however, as to whether somatization and conversion should be considered distinct or overlapping constructs, and whether they contribute to the pathogenesis of certain organic diseases or solely to medical…
Recent Developments in Alexithymia Theory and Research
OBJECTIVE: To review recent developments in alexithymia theory and research that are relevant to the field of psychosomatic medicine. METHOD: Articles were selected from the alexithymia literature published over the past decade that describe advances in the theoretical understanding of alexithymia or report empirical investigations of the relationships of the construct with emotion regulation and with somatic illness and disease. Empirical invest…

Interhemispheric Transfer Deficit in Alexithymia
OBJECTIVE: Previous research has demonstrated an association between alexithymia and a deficit in interhemispheric communication in Vietnam combat veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder. The purpose of this study was to evaluate this association in a nonclinical sample. METHODS: The efficiency of interhemispheric transfer was assessed in 14 alexithymic and 15 nonalexithymic right-handed, male, undergraduate university students using a tactil…

Interhemispheric Transfer Deficit in Alexithymia

Disorders of Affect Regulation
An entirely new perspective on how emotions influence mental and physical health. The authors present recent thinking about the development and regulation of emotions, and argue that several common but difficult to treat psychiatric illnesses, including drug addictions, eating disorders, panic disorder and post traumatic stress disorders, are a consequence of an inability to regulate distressing emotions through mental processes. The book also ad…

Is alexithymia a non‐neurotic personality dimension? A response to Rubino, Grasso, Sonnino & Pezzarossa
Rubino, Grasso, Sonnino & Pezzarossa (1991) reported a significantly higher level of alexithymia in neurotic and delusional patients than in psychosomatic patients, and concluded that alexithymia is not a non‐neurotic personality dimension. Further empirical data are cited, however, that contradict this conclusion and support the view that alexithymia is a type of affect deficit

Demoniacal possession and psychoanalytic theory
Psychodynamic explanations of demoniacal possession have been based mainly on Freud's retrospective interpretation of the illness of Christoph Haitzman. Freud applied libido theory to his analysis of the case and this subsequently influenced the psychoanalytic theory of paranoid symptom formation and the psychoanalytic approach to the psychoses. Fairbairn, and later Guntrip, applied an object relations theory to the case and conceptualized demoni…
I Alexithymia
This four-part symposium, which replaces our usual overview, derives from a panel on Alexithymia and Culture presented at the May 1986 annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Washington. The perspectives of the authors are diverse: Taylor (a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst) and Catchlove (an anaesthetist who directs a pain clinic) present views generally sympathetic to the notion of alexithymia; while Prince and Kirmayer (psychia…

Criterion validity of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale
The criterion validity of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS) was assessed by administering the scale to 46 patients referred to a behavioral medicine outpatient clinic. Clinical ratings derived from observed interviews served as the criterion. TAS scores were significantly higher for the group of patients identified by two out of three raters as "alexithymic" than for the group identified as "nonalexithymic." On the basis of these findings, prel…
The Alexithymia Construct
Psychoanalysis and Psychosomatics
The usefulness of psychoanalysis to psychosomatic medicine has been limited by the longstanding assumption that the psychological disorder in psychosomatic patients resembles the conflict-based psychopathology that Freud identified in psychoneurotic patients. Recent investigations of the alexithymia construct, and the discovery that social relationships can influence health over the entire life span, have challenged this assumption and created an…
