Disproportionate minority contact in the juvenile justice system
Historically, minority youth have experienced harsher punishments and more negative outcomes than White youth even when risk assessment is used. The current study investigated the role of ethnicity in an understudied dispositional decision–program referral–and the outcomes associated with said referral using a sample of juvenile offenders (N = 2,678). The study used the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS/CMI) to determine (1) i…
Youth Drug Offenders
Understanding the criminogenic risk factors and treatment needs of juvenile drug offenders is important because of the myriad negative outcomes that befall juveniles that are involved in drugs. A widely used juvenile risk assessment tool, the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS/CMI) was utilized to explore criminogenic risk factors and treatment needs to predict recidivism. Demographic differences between drug and nondrug offend…
Gender-Responsive Intervention for Female Juvenile Offenders
The increasing proportion of girls in the juvenile justice system has prompted courts to develop gender-responsive services. The present study examined data from a mid-sized county juvenile court to examine the effects of a group home intervention for girls. The study compared group home participants ( n = 172) with girls who did not receive group home treatment ( n = 814) using propensity score matching (PSM). Girls who received group home treat…

The child as held in the mind of the mother
Using a longitudinal design, this study examined the relationship of a mother's prenatal representation of her child and her parenting behavior with that child at 1 year of age in a sample of women who were either exposed or not exposed to intimate partner violence (IPV) ( N = 164; M child age = 1.1 years, SD = .11 years; 52% male). Controlling for prenatal IPV, a MANCOVA analysis revealed that prenatal representational typology was significantly…
Student Experiences of the Adolescent Diversion Project
Service‐learning partnerships between universities and surrounding communities striving to create systems‐level change must consider an emphasis in critical community service; a community centered paradigm where students are taught to work with communities to better understand contexts surrounding a social problem, as opposed to merely volunteering to provide a service to a community. The Adolescent Diversion Project (ADP), which has been operati…
Risk Assessment
Risk assessments like the Youth Level of Service/Case Management Inventory (YLS/CMI) are widely used by juvenile justice systems to identify young offenders that are likely to reoffend. These instruments are also used for case management purposes, to determine areas of criminogenic risk that are amenable to intervention. This study explored the risk–recidivism relationship between YLS/CMI score and reoffense rates over 24 months for African Ameri…

An Evaluation Study of the Young Empowered Sisters (YES!) Program
The present study examines the effects of a culturally relevant school-based intervention in promoting cultural assets (i.e., ethnic identity, collectivist orientation, racism awareness, and libratory youth activism) among a group of African American adolescent girls. The overall goal of the intervention was to promote cultural factors that can protect African American youth from the adverse effects of racism. A total of 74 African American girls…
Domestic violence, maternal parenting, maternal mental health, and infant externalizing behavior.
This study examined whether maternal functioning mediated the relationship between domestic violence (DV) and infant externalizing behavior. Participants were 203 mother-infant dyads. Support was found for a partially mediated model in which maternal functioning mediated the relationship between current DV and infant externalizing behaviors. Past DV was directly associated with infants' externalizing behavior. Results suggest the need for early i…

Infant exposure to domestic violence predicts heightened sensitivity to adult verbal conflict
The current study examined whether one-year-old infants whose mothers had been victims of domestic violence during the infant's lifetime (exposed; n = 30), compared to those who had not (not exposed; n = 59), would be more likely to experience distress in response to a simulated verbal conflict and whether amount of distress expressed would be influenced by infant temperament. Infants were videotaped during and for five minutes after an experimen…
The Influence of Community Violence on the Functioning of Women Experiencing Domestic Violence
The relationships among women's experiences of domestic violence, community violence, and their mental health functioning were explored (N = 94). Social contagion theory was used to argue for the link between community violence and family violence. Results revealed that women's experiences of domestic violence were not related to community violence. Furthermore, women's mental health functioning was solely associated with their experiences of dom…
Family Support and Mental Health in Pregnant Women Experiencing Interpersonal Partner Violence
This study investigated the relationship between family support and mental health in a community sample of pregnant women experiencing interpersonal partner violence (IPV). This study also examined how family support may differentially affect mental health in Black and White women experiencing IPV. A total of 110 participants (32 Black and 78 White) were obtained from the first time period of a longitudinal study examining the effects of domestic…
AJCP as a Vehicle for Improving Community Life
The current article is an analysis of the research represented in American Journal of Community Psychology (AJCP) from 1993 to 1998, including a comparison to two previously published analytic reviews by Lounsbury et al. (J. W. Lounsbury, D. S. Leader, E. P. Meares, & M. P. Cook, 1980) and Speer et al. (P. Speer, A. Dey, P. Griggs, C. Gibson, B. Lubin, & J. Hughey, 1992), respectively. Observed trends are examined with references to major epistem…
An Empowerment Evaluation Model for Sexual Assault Programs
Using an empowerment evaluation approach, the Sexual Assault and Rape Prevention (SARP) Evaluation Project brought together university researchers, public health evaluators, state funders, and program staff to provide evaluation training and consultation to all state‐funded rape prevention and victim services programs in Michigan. In this paper, the specific activities of the SARP project are described, and process and outcome data are presented …
The Social Networks of Women Experiencing Domestic Violence
The research literature has demonstrated that battered women living in shelters experience impaired social support. This study examines this phenomenon among battered women living in the community. This study compared a group of pregnant battered women ( n =145) and a group of pregnant nonbattered women ( n =58) in terms of their structural [e.g., total number of supporters, network members in violent relationships with their partners (an index o…

Promoting Political Empowerment
The aim of this research is to examine the effects of an intervention, focusing on the development of political empowerment, with university students. Undergraduates were randomly assigned to one of two conditions (intervention/control) and were surveyed at two time points: before implementation of the intervention and upon completion of the intervention (or the equivalent two semester period). ANCOVA analyses reveal that individuals who particip…
Structure and stability of maternal support among pregnant and parenting adolescents
This study examined the effects of positive support and conflict that pregnant/ parenting adolescents received from their mothers. A typology of maternal support and conflict was established using cluster analytic procedures from data collected prenatally; prenatal cluster membership was related to significant differences on three measures of stress. The prenatal cluster solution was replicated at the one-month postnatal period. Postnatal cluster…

Social climate differences in a large psychiatric hospital
Most of the research on social climate in psychiatric hospitals has addressed differences in client/staff perceptions, while neglecting the differences in social climate across types of wards. However, the literature on setting heterogeneity has also suggested that it might be important to examine differences between types of wards within a psychiatric institution since different setting subclassifications have been identified in other settings (…
The Role of Social Support in the Lives of Women Exiting Domestic Violence Shelters
The present study investigated an intervention designed to increase battered women's social support and make their existing supports more responsive to their dire needs. It is part of a larger project that utilizes a longitudinal, experimental design to examine the effects, over a 2-year period, of an advocacy intervention on battered women's overall psychological well-being and ability to remain free of abuse. Study results (a) describe the soci…
Health effects of experiences of sexual violence for women with abusive partners
We assessed the incidence of sexual violence, physical violence, physical health symptoms, gynecological symptoms, and risk behaviors for contracting an STD or HIV infection in women who had used a shelter for women with abusive partners. In addition, we investigated the relationships between sexual violence and the frequency of physical health symptoms, including specific gynecological symptoms. Results indicated that one fourth of the women int…
Women Who Use Domestic Violence Shelters
This study examined the levels of depression reported by women who had used a domestic violence shelter. Depressive symptoms were assessed three times: immediately after shelter exit, 10 weeks thereafter, and 6 months later. Whereas 83% of the women reported at least mild depression on the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression (CES-D) scale upon shelter exit, only 58% were depressed 10 weeks later. This did not change at the 6-month follo…

Social Program Innovation and Dissemination
The dissemination of social program innovations that have been demonstrated to be effective through rigorous evaluation is an important issue. The classical dissemination framework emphasizes the position that programs implemented with fidelity to the original model are most likely to produce the positive outcomes demonstrated in the model's evaluation phase. However, critics suggest that local programs that are extensively modified are more like…

The long‐term impact of nonprofessional service experience on college students
Nonprofessional counselors
Conclusion In summary, the present study suggests that selection of university undergraduate nonprofessional counselors using paper‐and‐pencil measures had little incremental validity over self‐selection and potential treatment effects. In addition, the results suggest that the training and supervision experience of nonprofessionals clearly can have different impacts on attitudes and satisfaction. In fact, students in the least intensive conditio…
Intervention orientation
Almost from its inception at the Swampscott conference in 1965, community psychology has criticized interventions focusing solely on "person variables" or "blaming the victim." In order to begin to explore this orientation more scientifically, these studies created a measure to tap person- and situation-blame orientations of service providers working with adolescents in legal jeopardy. Its reliability and construct validity were examined; implica…
