In this paper, we present two corpus-based case studies which cast doubt on the postulation of a distinction between complements and modifiers in pre-head position in the English noun phrase. In this paper we present a detailed new analysis of the English expressions once , twice and thrice . These, we claim, are primarily compound determinatives, analogous in many respects to expressions like someone and somewhere .
