A Re-exploration of the Relationship between Types of Sex Unions and Fertility
Data from a national sample of 4199 lower socioeconomic status Barbadian women between ages 16-50 were studied to assess the relationship between fertility and the type of sex union. Cross-tabulation and multiple regression analysis were employed to assess this relationship. Findings from this study replicated earlier field research on other English-speaking Caribbean islands. Emigration and fertility decline
This paper examines the role of emigration in the recent fertility declines which have occurred on the island of Barbados. Barbados with a history of over two centuries of out-migration has experienced in the period 1951–1970 very significant migration loss. In the period 1960–1970 and up to the present fertility has been declining. An important question is what part has this net migration loss of 32,600 had on the reduction of the crude birth ra…
Patterns of Sex‐Union Formation in Barbados
Cette étude, basée sur un échantillon de 4199 femmes de bas statut socioéconomique interviewées en 1971 sur l'île des Barbades, examine les types de formation des unions entre sexes. Trois types d'unions entre sexes sont identifyées: les unions occasionnelles (visiting), les unions de type « loi commune » (commonlaw) et les mariages. Studies of student activists, especially those of Flacks (1967) and Keniston (1968), have demonstrated the importance of familial socialization experiences in the biographies of these young persons.Parents of protesters are typically upper- middle-class professionals of liberal political persuasions, decision-making in the family is democratic, and children are encouraged to develop a sense of responsibility to others as well as a capacity to be …
