  • The domestic dog that lived ∼17,000 years ago in the Lower Magdalenian of Erralla site (Basque Country)

    Open Access•Montserrat Hervella, Asier San-Juan-Nó et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2022•Referencias: 18

Dogs are known to be the first species domesticated by humans, although the geographic and temporal origin of this process is still under debate in different fields of knowledge. In the present study, we examined a humerus from a canid recovered in the Lower Magdalenian level of the site of Erralla (Zestoa, Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, Spain), combining morphology, radiocarbon dating and genetics. Our results confirm the identification of this speci…

  • Isotopic evidence of strong reliance on animal foods and dietary heterogeneity among Early-Middle Neolithic communities of Iberia

    Open Access•Teresa Fernández-Crespo, R J Schulting et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2019•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 61

Stable carbon and nitrogen isotope research on past populations in the Iberian Neolithic has emphasized the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. This study provides the first isotopic insights into the diet and subsistence economy of Early and Middle Neolithic populations from open-air sites in interior north-central Iberia. We present bone collagen carbon (?13C) and nitrogen (?15N) isotope ratios for 44 humans and 33 animals recovered from six cem…

  • Re-evaluating the Neolithic

Open Access•M Cubas, Jesús Altuna et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of World Prehistory•2016•Citada por: 22•Referencias: 4

Research projects undertaken in the Cantabrian region since 1980 have produced new, high-quality information about the neolithisation process(es) in this area. It is now necessary to review this archaeological information and test the main hypotheses put forward to explain it. This paper presents an update on the archaeological evidence (sites, chronological dates, archaeozoological, archaeobotanical and technological information) for the early N…

  • The Bird Contour Découpé at the Site of Ekain (Deva, Basque Country)

Open Access•Jesús Altuna, Koro Mariezkurrena et al.•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2013

The Cueva de Ekain is known for the magnificent collection of figurative rock art that is located deep within the cave. The first archaeological excavations of the site took place between 1969 and 1975, and new excavations were carried out between 2007 and 2011. This paper presents a contour découpé that was found there in 2008. The contour découpé in question was made on the rib of a large bovid that had previously been split and had the spongy …
