Applying PVEST to identify the diverse coping and identity resources with which Dacamented and undocumented latine students navigate their journeys to and through higher education
Undocumented and DACAmented Latine high school graduates are enrolling in college at a low rate despite being eligible for in‐state tuition in 25 U.S. states. More research is needed about the conditions that support students' journeys to and through their institutions. We conducted this qualitative study with nine Latine students who attended our small, public university in Washington to better understand how to support them throughout their edu…
The Flourishing Congregations Project: Character Strengths Pathways to Enhance Well-Being beyond the Individual
Researchers in philosophy and psychology have called for an integration of the science of positive psychology with the humanities, to catalyze new avenues of flourishing throughout society. Religion, as a field within the humanities, may be well poised to be integrated with positive psychology, namely character strengths, to promote flourishing. On the other hand, religious institutions have entrenched and sacrosanct perspectives and traditions, …
Fathering Within Transnational and Mixed-Status Mayan Families: An Exploratory Study
This study explores fathering within a small sample of Mayan transnational and mixed-status families divided between the Northeastern United States and the Quiché region of Guatemala. A positive masculinities framework informs this theoretical thematic analysis of semistructured interviews with 7 migrant fathers and 2 sons-as-fathers who were caring for younger siblings in Guatemala. Analyses sought to illuminate how the performances of fathering…
Critical reflection about socioeconomic inequalities among White young men from poor and working-class backgrounds
An intersectional approach to human development emphasizes the multiple social categories individuals occupy, some of which confer privilege (e.g., being White) and some of which confer marginalization (e.g., being poor). This approach is needed especially in critical consciousness scholarship, and particularly in regard to understanding whether and how it may manifest among youth who simultaneously experience privileges due to some aspects of th…

Character Development within Youth Development Programs: Exploring Multiple Dimensions of Activity Involvement
We examined links among three dimensions of youth involvement (intensity, duration, and engagement) in Boy Scouts of America ( BSA ), an international out‐of‐school time ( OST ) youth development program designed to promote moral and performance character in boys. Using data from 737 youth and their parents who participated in one of 40 BSA program sites (commonly referred to as “packs”), we first considered how individual‐ and pack‐level measure…

I Mean, We’re Guys”: Constructing Gender at an All-Male Trade School
For young men, the transition to adulthood may be a time of heightened adherence to traditional gender roles and norms of masculinity. However, recent research with young men in gender-specific contexts has indicated that some contexts support a construction of masculinity that is more inclusive. Through a theoretical thematic analysis of interviews with young men in their first week at an all-male trade school, we explored if and how participant…

Continuities and Discontinuities in Human Rights Violations: Historically Situating the Psychosocial Effects of Migration
Despite recent interest in the psychosocial effects of deportation, psychologists have rarely investigated the multiple forms of violence that compelled many undocumented migrants now living in the United States to “leave home.” This thematic narrative analysis of interviews with four Maya from Guatemala, part of a larger participatory and action research project, particularizes the experiences of Maya in the United States who are frequently subs…

Framing immigration to and deportation from the United States: Guatemalan and Salvadoran families make meaning of their experiences
The United States (US) deportation system and its recent applications have profound implications for the integrity and well-being of immigrant families. Since harsh policies were adopted in 1996, millions of non-citizens, mostly from Mexico and Central America, have been forced to leave the US. Despite the large numbers of people directly threatened by the deportation system, little is known about how it affects Central American immigrant childre…
