  • Cohort Prevalence Estimates Are Sensitive to Prebaseline Mortality

    Open Access•Molly Rosenberg, Erika T Beidelman et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2026•Referencias: 39

All cohorts are conditioned on survival to a study's baseline. The validity of estimates drawn from these cohorts of survivors may be compromised if those who die prior to enrollment have different covariate structures than survivors. In this research note, we used data from the “HAALSI Cohort” (Health and Aging in Africa: A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community in South Africa) of older adults in rural South Africa and a “Mortality Cohort” …

  • Changes in the provision and utilisation of health care services for chronic health conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic in rural northeast South Africa

Open Access•Chodziwadziwa Kabudula, Chodziwadziwa W Kabudula et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2025

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the provision and utilisation of health care services with varying magnitude across settings due to spatial temporal variation in the burden of COVID-19 cases and the roll-out of local COVID-19 response policies. This study assesses changes in the provision and utilisation of health care services for three major chronic health conditions (HIV/AIDS, hypertension, and diabetes) over the pre-COVID-19 an…

  • The Strength of Long-Distance Ties for Aging Healthy With HIV

Open Access•Shao-Tzu Yu, Brian Houle et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2025•Referencias: 9

Objectives In lower-income settings with limited government-funded care, personal social networks are often the primary means by which older persons access resources and support. We tested the association between long-distance ties—ties that span greater geographical and network distances—and HIV treatment outcomes in a rural South African community with one of the largest aging populations with HIV. Methods We used data from the “Health and Agin…

  • Leadership, cohesion, and stress in primary care facilities and retention in chronic care in rural northeast South Africa before and during the Covid-19 pandemic

Open Access•Hannah H Leslie, Morelearnings Sibanda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2024

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hypertension are major contributors to morbidity and mortality in South Africa. Effective management of these conditions is critical to population health, yet patient management and retention varies by facility for reasons that are not fully understood. We assessed whether measures of clinic leadership, cohesion, and stress were associated with retention for HIV and hypertension in a cohort of pa…

  • Performance evaluation of machine learning and Computer Coded Verbal Autopsy (CCVA) algorithms for cause of death determination

Open Access•Michael Tonderai Mapundu, Chodziwadziwa Kabudula et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Computer Coded Verbal Autopsy (CCVA) algorithms are commonly used to determine the cause of death (CoD) from questionnaire responses extracted from verbal autopsies (VAs). However, they can only operate on structured data and cannot effectively harness information from unstructured VA narratives. Machine Learning (ML) algorithms have also been applied successfully in determining the CoD from VA narratives, allowing the use of auxiliary informatio…

  • Twin epidemics

Open Access•Brian Houle, Chodziwadziwa Kabudula et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Our results indicate that HIV and elevated blood pressure are acting as separate, non-interacting epidemics affecting high proportions of the older adult population. PLWH with unsuppressed viral load were at higher mortality risk compared to those uninfected. Systolic blood pressure was a mortality risk factor independent of HIV status. As antiretroviral therapy becomes more widespread, further longitudinal follow-up is needed to understand how t…

  • Pregnancy-related healthcare utilisation in Agincourt, South Africa, 1993–2018

Open Access•Daniel Sack, Ryan G Wagner et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy-related health services, an important mediator of global health priorities, require robust health infrastructure. We described pregnancy-related healthcare utilisation among rural South African women from 1993 to 2018, a period of social, political and economic transition. METHODS: We included participants enrolled in the Agincourt Health and Socio-Demographic Surveillance System in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa, a pop…

  • HIV Status and Antiretroviral Therapy as Predictors of Disability among Older South Africans

Open Access•Stephen B Asiimwe, Livia Montana et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2020•Referencias: 2

Objectives: Among older people living with HIV (PLWH) and comparable individuals without HIV, we evaluated whether associations of HIV and antiretroviral therapy (ART) with disability depend on body mass index (BMI). Methods: We analyzed 4552 participants in the "Health and Aging in Africa: A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community in South Africa." (HAALSI) We compared prevalence of disability (≥1 impairment in basic activities of daily livin…

  • Clusters of HIV Risk and Protective Sexual Behaviors in Agincourt, Rural South Africa

  • Cohort Profile

Open Access•Francesc Xavier Gómez-Olivé, Livia Montana et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Population ageing is a global phenomenon. The United Nations estimates that the world population aged over 60 will have increased 3-fold from 1950 to 2050, to reach 21% of the population.1 This compositional shift is happening fastest in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC).2 South Africa in particular is undergoing a dramatic demographic and epidemiological transition, and little is known about the socioeconomic determinants or consequences o…

  • Interviewer-driven Variability in Social Network Reporting

    Open Access•Guy Harling, Jessica M Perkins et al.•ARTICLE•CAM•2018•Citada por: 14•Referencias: 18

Social network analysis depends on how social ties to others are elicited during interviews, a process easily affected by respondent and interviewer behaviors. We investigate how the number of self-reported important social contacts varied within a single data collection round. Our data come from Health and Aging in Africa: a Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH community (HAALSI), a comprehensive population-based survey of individuals aged 40 years …

  • Cardiometabolic risk in a population of older adults with multiple co-morbidities in rural south africa

    Open Access•Thomas A Gaziano, Shafika Abrahams-Gessel et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

This cohort has high CMD risk based on both traditional risk factors and novel markers like hsCRP. Longitudinal follow-up of the cohort will allow us to determine the long-term impact of increased lifespan in a population with both high HIV infection and CMD risk

  • Assessing Changes in Household Socioeconomic Status in Rural South Africa, 2001-2013

  • Completeness of birth and death registration in a rural area of South Africa

Open Access•Michel Garenne, Mark Collinson et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2016

BACKGROUND: Completeness of vital registration remains very low in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in rural areas. OBJECTIVES: To investigate trends and factors in completeness of birth and death registration in Agincourt, a rural area of South Africa covering a population of about 110,000 persons, under demographic surveillance since 1992. The population belongs to the Shangaan ethnic group and hosts a sizeable community of Mozambican refugees. D…

  • Cause-specific childhood mortality in Africa and Asia

Open Access•Peter Kim Streatfield, Wasif Ali Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2014

BACKGROUND: Childhood mortality, particularly in the first 5 years of life, is a major global concern and the target of Millennium Development Goal 4. Although the majority of childhood deaths occur in Africa and Asia, these are also the regions where such deaths are least likely to be registered. The INDEPTH Network works to alleviate this problem by collating detailed individual data from defined Health and Demographic Surveillance sites. By re…

  • Two decades of mortality change in rural northeast South Africa

Open Access•Chodziwadziwa Kabudula, Chodziwadziwa W Kabudula et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2014

BACKGROUND: The MRC/Wits University Agincourt research centre, part of the INDEPTH Network, has documented mortality in a defined population in the rural northeast of South Africa for 20 years (1992-2011) using long-term health and socio-demographic surveillance. Detail on the unfolding, at times unpredicted, mortality pattern has been published. This experience is reviewed here and updated using more recent data. OBJECTIVE: To present a review a…

  • Mortality from external causes in Africa and Asia

Open Access•Peter Kim Streatfield, Wasif Ali Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2014

BACKGROUND: Mortality from external causes, of all kinds, is an important component of overall mortality on a global basis. However, these deaths, like others in Africa and Asia, are often not counted or documented on an individual basis. Overviews of the state of external cause mortality in Africa and Asia are therefore based on uncertain information. The INDEPTH Network maintains longitudinal surveillance, including cause of death, at populatio…

  • Malaria mortality in Africa and Asia

Open Access•Peter Kim Streatfield, Wasif Ali Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Global Health Action•2014

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to be a major cause of infectious disease mortality in tropical regions. However, deaths from malaria are most often not individually documented, and as a result overall understanding of malaria epidemiology is inadequate. INDEPTH Network members maintain population surveillance in Health and Demographic Surveillance System sites across Africa and Asia, in which individual deaths are followed up with verbal autopsies…
