Chance interventions – on bricolage and the state as an entrepreneur in a declining industry
In this paper, we develop the notion of bricolage by paying attention to the role of chance in the same, rather than approaching it from the perspective of control and agency. We argue that the concept of chance can be used to downplay the common tendency to focus on individual agency in bricolage, proposing an alternative understanding of the latter as constellations of resources coming together in unexpected combinations. We situate our theoret…
On Gendered Technologies and Cyborg Writing
Since H élène C ixous introduced it in 1975, the notion of a specifically feminine writing — écriture féminine — has been discussed as a provocative and potentially disruptive form of representation that breaks with masculine and authoritarian modes thereof. However, in this paper we will discuss how the notion of écriture féminine may itself be at risk of getting trapped within the gender binary its progenitors tried to break free from. As a com…
Specters, ruins and chimeras
The historical materialist leaves it to others to be drained by the whore called 'Once upon a time' in historicism's bordello. He remains in control of his powers, man enough to blast open the continuum of history. © 2013 Taylor & Francis
Organizing Christmas
Organizing Christmas is an exploration of the organizational character of Christmas. Taking as its starting point the view that Christmas initially achieved popularity due to its potential to promote social cohesion and political stability, this book both charts and scrutinizes its global emergence as the year's preeminent economic and organizational event. Combining historical narrative, original interviews, and social scientific research and th…
Rose's Turn” Female Careers in the Life (1908–1984) and Portrayals (1940–1959) of Ethel Merman
This article discusses the construction of images of female careers through a case from musical theater, with a particular focus on following the life and roles of Ethel Merman – ‘The Grande Dame of Broadway’ – both on and off the stage. By focusing on an individual performer, we wish to highlight how we can achieve a more complex understanding of the constructions of female career-possibilities than we can by studying representations or biograph…
Organization Studies
Pop (Culture) Goes the Organization
Do we need to study popular culture within organization studies, and exactly what is it we do if we choose to do so? Is it nothing more than organizational scholars co-opting yet another discipline, or is there an independent contribution to be made? I will in this text argue that in order to develop, organization studies must find its own identity in relation to cultural studies, and that the search for this must by necessity include the study o…

Organizing revolution
Organization
Can organization theory truly grasp excess, or is this a constant paradoxical other of organization, a permanently elusive remainder? As a phenomenon might it mark out the contours of a configuration that points to an aporia of organization that scholarship and research in organization has yet to confront? In posing these questions we note that excess has proven notoriously tricky to handle through conventional modes of analytical scholarship, an…
Anachronism and innovation
Anachronism is commonly viewed as a mistake or a sin in historical analysis, and thus to be avoided. This article argues that there is a place for anachronism when engaging with ahistorical fields, and that anachronism can be used as critical analysis. By way of studying the famous French chef Antonin Carême, and the way in which he utilized revisionist history to position his own nouvelle cuisine, the article discusses innovation management and i…
Oppression, Art and Aesthetics
In a situation where the miserable reality can only be changed through radical political praxis, the concern with aesthetics demands justification... Marcuse (1979) Marcuse's words neatly encapsulate the aim of this special issue -what does art (and aesthetics) have to do with management and organization? Why, when capitalism still grows fat on the fruits of child labor, and squeezes its profits from the sweatshop, for example, are we concerning o…
Is there a cannibal in organization studies? Notes on anthropophagy and organization (Recipe included)
This article draws out cannibals and cannibalism to elaborate issues of boundaries and consumption in theorizing organization. The logic(s) of cannibalism highlight some of organization’s inherent tensions, stimulating our understanding via the manifold movements of the cannibal. In a moment of reflection—the negotiation of who should and who should not be consumed—the cannibal appears, a figure at the precise point of passage between the organiz…
I Love The Dough
Whereas literary and cinematic representations of economy and management have been analyzed for some time (see e.g. CitationCzarniawska and Guillet de Monthoux, 1994; CitationHassard and Holliday, 1998), precious little interest has been directed to similar aspects in popular music. Consequently, this paper analyzes economy as it is portrayed and disseminated in rap music. By discussing how conspicuous consumption and economic discourses are used…
General Economy and Productive Dualisms
Through an investigation of the organizing potential of productive dualisms and ontological hierarchies that move toward epistemic and ontological closures, this essay theorizes the bounded potential of fluidity, and points to the possibility of waste, excess and sacrifice within a general economy of gender. We emphasize the apparently paradoxical role that dualisms — especially dualisms understood semiotically — have played in the foundational w…
Znakomstva I Svyazi' (Acquaintances and connections) -Blat, the Soviet Union, and mundane entrepreneurship
The discussion regarding entrepreneurship and society has often presupposed that this society by necessity will be one that embraces the market economy as a guiding principle. This paper questions this assumption by discussing a command economy, namely the Soviet Union, as a fundamentally entrepreneurial society. By introducing the case of the blat, 'Russia's economy of favours', the paper illustrates how mundane individual economies can be a par…
