  • New insights into the subsistence economy of the Late Bronze Age (1100–400 cal BC) communities in the southeastern Baltic

Open Access•Karolis Minkevičius, Giedrė Piličiauskienė et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2023

This paper presents the findings of a research project aimed at reconstructing the subsistence economy of the Late Bronze Age communities in eastern Lithuania. We focused on examining archaeobotanical and zooarchaeological assemblages from three hillforts alongside δ13C and δ15N stable isotope analysis of plant and animal remains. Our results suggest that local populations primarily relied on growing domestic plants and animals for their subsiste…

  • Baltic Amber in Hungarian Bronze Age. New data and current stage of research

    Open Access•Mateusz Jaeger, Gabriella Kulcsár et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 27

Amber was one of the key raw materials distributed in Bronze Age Europe. One of its varieties – succinite – wasexchanged over a vast area stretching from its sources on the southern shores of the Baltic Sea to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The chemical identification of Baltic amber significantly expands our knowledge of the dynamics and nature of the relationships connecting different regions of Europe in the first half of the second mill…

  • Animal Bones, Bone Artefacts and Bone Working at Late Bronze Age Fortified Settlements in North-Eastern Lithuania

Open Access•Heidi Luik, Giedrė Piličiauskienė et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologia Lituana•2022

The article discusses artefacts made of osseous materials found in the Late Bronze Age fortified settlement sites in north-eastern Lithuania. Earlier, Bronze Age bone items from three Lithuanian sites – Narkūnai, Nevieriškė and Kereliai – have been analysed more thoroughly. Of sites discussed here, Sokiškiai has been archaeologically investigated in the beginning of the 1980-ies. In recent years, research has been carried out on the fortified se…

  • Bronze casting and communication in the southeastern Baltic bronze age

    Open Access•Vytenis Podėnas, Agnė Čivilytė•ARTICLE•Lietuvos archeologija•2019

The SE Baltic Bronze Age is characterized by a lack of indigenous metalwork traditions as it had been a time when metal finds were predominantly imported or were cast locally, but in foreign styles. This paper analyses the bronze casting remains found in the SE Baltic and discusses the role of these production sites within a wider European network. Through typological identification of the negatives in casting moulds, we assess predominantly Nord…

  • In Search of a Theoretical Assessment of Bronze Age Society in the Baltic Countries

    Open Access•Agnė Čivilytė•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2012

This article surveys tendencies in Bronze Age social research in the Baltic countries. It marks a new departure in archaeological scholarship in the region, and examines the influence of wider European theories on local Bronze Age research. The most important issue to be discussed is the uncritical application of theoretical models on east Baltic archaeology, without reference to the region’s specific culture. Thus, the Bronze Age social structur…
