Breastfeeding support during the Covid-19 pandemic in England
Breastfeeding support has declined in recent years, and did not meet the needs of many women during the pandemic. Planning for a future emergency should include adequate provision of breastfeeding support particularly if staff are redeployed into other roles. The characteristics associated with support can inform service planning and delivery. Future research should use these factors to develop novel ideas for intervention, such as directly targe…
First-Time Mothers' Expectations and Experiences of Postnatal Care in England
Postnatal care is the aspect of maternity care with which women in England are least satisfied. Little is known about first-time mothers' expectations of postnatal care, or how these expectations relate to their experiences and appraisal of care. Thirty-two first-time mothers took part in a longitudinal qualitative descriptive study, based on two semi-structured interviews-the first in pregnancy, and the second 2 to 3 months after birth. Trajecto…
Evangelical Religion and Popular Education
Under the influence of the evangelical movement in the 18th and early 19th centuries education, in one form or another, was brought to a vast number of people in England and Wales. Originally published in 1969, it is this phenomenon that forms the subject of Dr McLeish’s book. The two central figures are Griffith Jones and Hannah More and the movements are seen almost entirely through their work. Dr McLeish examines the nature and aims of the sch…

Evaluation of trained volunteer doula services for disadvantaged women in five areas in England
Disadvantaged childbearing women experience barriers to accessing health and social care services and face greater risk of adverse medical, social and emotional outcomes. Support from doulas (trained lay women) has been identified as a way to improve outcomes; however, in the UK doula support is usually paid-for privately by the individual, limiting access among disadvantaged groups. As part of an independent multi-site evaluation of a volunteer …
Can food vouchers improve nutrition and reduce health inequalities in low-income mothers and young children
Our evaluation of the Healthy Start programme in England suggests that a food subsidy programme can provide an important nutritional safety net and potentially improve nutrition for pregnant women and young children living on low incomes. Factors that could compromise this impact include erosion of voucher value relative to the rising cost of food, lack of access to registered retailers and barriers to registering for the programme. Addressing th…

Musical Ability and Mental Subnormality

The 121 children tested were drawn from four special schools. They range in age from 8 to 16, in IQ from 40 to 85. A factor of musical ability, independent of intelligence, is identified

The group was re‐tested with Bentley's test exactly a year later. The children's scores on all the tests in the three batteries (six in Seashore, seven in Wing, four in B…
