Archaeological and Pedological Studies of the Ust-Tersyuk Fortifications, Forest-Steppe Trans-Urals
Archaeological and Pedological Studies of the Ust-Tersyuk Fortifications, Forest-Steppe Trans-Urals
This article presents the findings of a multidisciplinary study of ramparts of Ust-Tersyuk, the largest two-platform fort in the forest-steppe zone of the Trans-Urals. Excavations of the outer defensive line revealed a chronology of construction works from the early 4th to the late 13th centuries. Based on the analysis of paleosols, a succession of environments during the respective period was reconstructed: from 300 to 500 AD a typical forest-st…
Fortifications of the Ust-Tersyuk fortified settlement of the Early Middle Ages
The article analyses early medieval structures of the outer fortification line in Ust-Tersyuk hillfort by the Iset River. The research is based on excavation finds made in 2010 and 2023. The fortified cape settlement is surrounded by a protection structure all around. Besides, it has two transverse structures that separate the cape and gullies and form two sites. One of the sites is pentagonal, the other one is octagonal. It is established that t…
Informative Capacity of the Sargat Culture’s Disturbed Burials
The article deals with a complex study of the materials obtained during archaeological excavation of the kurgan Novopokrovka 16 in the middle Irtysh river basin (Omsk region). The site, which is attributed to the Sargat culture (5th century BC – second half of the 3rd century AD), was located farmost on the right bank of the river Irtysh, nearby the group of “Princely kurgans”. Despite almost total disturbance by robbers and agricultural activity…
Paleoenvironmental studies of lakeside watershed settlements of the Tobol-Ishim inter-fluve (Zolotoe 1 settlement, Kurgan Oblast)
During the study of the process of settling people in the territory of the forest-steppe and steppe zones of Western Siberia, both valleyside settlement sites of the Bronze Age and watershed lakeside settlements have been identified. The settlement of Zolotoe 1 is one of the few sites of the Late Bronze Age investigated by excava-tions and confined to the vast water-dividing surface between the rivers Tobol and Ishim in Kurgan Oblast. Two stages …
Funeral Ware and Dietary Strategies in the Past
The article continues the publication of the results of multidisciplinary study of the Bronze Age cemetery Nepluyevsky in the Southern Trans-Urals, presenting the experience of studying the soil contents of ceramic vessels from kurgan 1. The pottery collection consists of 95 pots found intact or fragmentated in burials, food offerings pits and cenotaphs, as well as outside structures, i. e. on the ancient surface horizon. All studied structures w…
Structural and technical characteristics of the fortification system of the Dikaya Yama hillfort of the Early Iron Age in the Middle Tobol River area
The paper reports the results of the studies of the fortification system of the Early Iron Age Dikaya Yama hill-fort situated in the Middle Tobol River region of the Western Siberian forest-steppe zone. The hillfort was built by the population of the Sargatka Culture, and it is dated to the 3rd c. BC - 1st c. AD. The defence lines at the junc-tion of two adjacent fortified platforms have been studied. It has been determined that the earthwork of …
The Settlement of Konoplyanka 2 in the Southern Trans-Urals
The article presents preliminary results of the study of the Bronze Age settlement Konoplyanka 2 in the valley of the Karagaily-Ayat River (Kartaly district of the Chelyabinsk region). The materials demonstrate the manifestations of mobility that occurred in different chronological periods of the Late Bronze Age. Topical problems such as the existence of open villages in the South Trans-Urals in Sintashta time and the features of post-Sintashta a…
The Russian Pioneers’ Winter Camp on Karachinsky Island, the Lower Tobol River, Western Siberia
In 2014, an expedition from the Tyumen State University excavated an underground dwelling on Karachinsky Island, in the fl oodplain of the Tobol, to check the chronicle data saying that Yermak and his Cossacks had spent a winter at that place during the Siberian campaign. The dwelling, measuring 10 m by 5 m by 2 m, consisted of two chambers. Three to four bottom tiers of logs were preserved. Remains of a cellar were found in the central part east…

Geochemical Soil Analysis and Environmental Reconstructions at the Neolithic and Chalcolithic Settlement Kochegarovo-1 in the Forest-Steppe Zone of Western Siberia
The article outlines the results of the analysis of cultural layers and natural soil horizons at the Neolithic and Chalcolithic settlement Kochegarovo-1, and of the modern soil in its vicinities. The distribution of chemical elements and the associated geochemical ratios in the archaeological profile were compared to the background values. Six chemical elements (phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, and strontium) form distinct co…
Geochemical Features of the Ashy Layer (Zol'nic) at the Bronze Age Settlement of Streletskoe-1 in the Forest-Steppe Trans-Urals
The paper summarizes the results of a geo-chemical study of the soil samples collected from the ashy layer (zol’nic) at the Bronze Age settlement Streletskoye I in the Southern Trans-Urals and from the nearby natural deposition. The site is located on the left bank of the Ui river in Chelyabinsk region, Russia. The data on the distribution of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, manganese, sulfur, iron, titanium, rubidium, vanadium, cobalt, zinc and s…
Soils of an Early Medieval (4th–6th Centuries) Settlement in the Middle Tobol Region and their Paleogeographic Implication
The study examines the early medieval paleosol (4th–6th centuries AD) and background soil at the fortified settlement of Ust-Utyak-1 located in the forest-steppe area of the Middle Tobol region. Differences in soil type were discovered. In the last 1300–1500 years, the development of forest-steppe chernozems shows a tendency towards exceeding aridity, resulting in the evolvement of leached chernozems into typical chernozems. Comparative analysis …
