  • A case-based complexity approach to health inequality

    Open Access•Brian Castellani, Jonathan Wistow•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2026

Health inequalities are not static gradients of deprivation but emergent properties of complex, place-based social systems. This study applied a case-based complexity (CBC) approach, via the COMPLEX-IT platform, to analyse healthy life expectancy (HLE) in 141 English local authorities. The power of CBC lies in moving beyond aggregate-level conclusions to a trajectory-based analysis that captures the configurational dynamics of health inequality. …

  • Case-based systems mapping

Open Access•Brian Castellani, Corey Schimpf et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2025•Referencias: 1

In this work, we introduce case-based systems mapping (CBSM), an integration of exploratory systems mapping and case-based complexity. CBSM explores different groups of cases and their distinct configurations and then generates submaps that display the causal flows for these different groups. Combining these allows users to advance on systems mapping by allowing them to (1) explore how the causal factors within the map may cluster based on groups…

  • A ‘Cultural Models’ Approach to Psychotherapy for Refugees and Asylum Seekers

    Open Access•Mohaddeseh Ziyachi, Brian Castellani•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

Despite the existence of significant research on the mental health care challenges of migrants, particularly refugees and asylum seekers, less attention has been paid to treatment approaches. We used a case study from the UK to look at the topic from a cultural models approach (which comes from cognitive anthropology) to analyse migrants' experiences with mental health care. Twenty-five refugees and asylum seekers living in North East England and…

  • Approachable modeling and smart methods

    Open Access•Corey Schimpf, Brian Castellani•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2022•Referencias: 9

Advances in the integration of smart technology with interdisciplinary methods has created a new genre, approachable modeling and smart methods – AM-Smart for short. AM-Smart platforms address a major challenge for applied and public sector analysts, educators and those trained in traditional methods: accessing the latest advances in interdisciplinary (particularly computational) methods. AM-Smart platforms do so through nine design features. The…

  • Justified Stories with Agent-Based Modelling for Local Covid-19 Planning

Open Access•Jennifer Badham, Peter Barbrook-Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Artificial Societies…•2021

This paper presents JuSt-Social, an agent-based model of the COVID-epidemic with a range of potential social policy interventions. It was developed to support local authorities in North East England who are making decisions in a fast moving crisis with limited access to data. The proximate purpose of JuSt-Social is description, as the model represents knowledge about both COVID-transmission and intervention e ects. Its ultimate purpose is to gene…

  • Cased-based modelling and scenario simulation for ex-post evaluation

    Open Access•Corey Schimpf, Peter Barbrook-Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Evaluation•2021•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 28

Despite 20 years of increasing acceptance, implementing complexity-appropriate methods for ex-post evaluation remains a challenge: instead of focusing on complex interventions, methods need to help evaluators better explore how policies (no matter how simple) take place in real-world, open, dynamic systems where many intertwined factors about the cases being targeted affect outcomes in numerous ways. To assist in this advance, we developed case-b…

  • Policy evaluation for a complex world

    Open Access•Peter Barbrook-Johnson, Pete Barbrook-Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Evaluation•2021•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 12

The value of complexity science and related approaches in policy evaluation have been widely discussed over the last 20 years, not least in this journal. We are now at a crossroads; this Special Issue argues that the use of complexity science in evaluation could deepen and broaden rendering evaluations more practical and rigorous. The risk is that the drive to better evaluate policies from a complexity perspective could falter. This special issue…

  • Exploring the Networking of Academic Health Science Leaders

Susan J Lieff, Susan Lieff et al.•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2020

PURPOSE: Networking is essential to leadership effectiveness in the business context. Yet little is known about leadership networking within the academic health science context. If we are going to train academic leaders, we must first understand the relational, network-based activities of their work. The purpose of this study was to explore how academic health science leaders engage in networking activities in the academic health science context.…

  • Case-based methods and agent-based modelling

Brian Castellani, Peter Barbrook-Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2019•Referencias: 7

Two leading camps for studying social complexity are case-based methods (CBM) and agent-based modelling (ABM). Despite the potential epistemological links between ‘cases’ and ‘agents,’ neither camp has leveraged their combined strengths. A bridge can be built, however, by drawing on Abbott’s insight that ‘agents are cases doing things’, Byrne’s suggestion that ‘cases are complex systems with agency’, and by viewing CBM and ABM within the broader …

  • The Defiance of Global Commitment

    Brian Castellani•BOOK•Defiance of Global Commitment•2018

The Brexit vote; the election of Trump; the upsurge of European nationalism; the devolution of the Arab Spring; global violence; Chinese expansionism; disruptive climate change; the riotous instabilities of the world capitalist system...While diverse in nature, these events share a common denominator: they are less a failure of policy, and more a complex social psychological reaction to globalization, the result of which presently threatens our s…

  • Data Mining

    Open Access•Brian Castellani, J W Peltason et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2003•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 9

The new computational algorithms emerging in the data mining literature-in particular, the self-organizing map (SOM) and decision tree analysis (DTA)-offer qualitative researchers a unique set of tools for analyzing health informatics data. The uniqueness of these tools is that although they can be used to find meaningful patterns in large, complex quantitative databases, they are qualitative in orientation. To illustrate the utility of these too…

  • Grounded Neural Networking

    Open Access•Brian Castellani, John Castellani et al.•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•2003•Referencias: 5

The latest advances in artificial intelligence software (neural networking) have finally made it possible for qualitative researchers to apply the grounded theory method to the study of complex quantitative databases in a manner consistent with the postpositivistic, neopragmatic assumptions of most symbolic interactionists. The strength of neural networking for the study of quantitative data is twofold: it blurs the boundaries between qualitative…

  • Physician Views on Practicing Professionalism in the Corporate Age

    Open Access•Brian Castellani, Delese Wear•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2000•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 25

Arnold Relman argues that medical education does not prepare students and residents to practice their profession in today's corporate health care system. Corporate health care administrators agree: Physicians enter the workforce unskilled in contract negotiation, evidence-based medicine, navigating bureaucratic systems, and so forth. What about practicing physicians? Do they agree as well? According to this study, they do. Feeling like decentered…
