Open Access•Antònia Morey Tous, Andreu Seguí Beltrán et al.•ARTICLE•Áreas Revista Internacional de…•2025

This article estimates the income of working families in the rural manufacturing and agricultural districts of Mallorca and Menorca. It focuses on day labourer households consisting of a conjugal unit and dependent children (classified as type 3b in Laslett’s classification), a life stage marked by vulnerability. With this focus, we examine the relative contribution of the male head’s income in working-class households and explore whether contemp…

  • Socio-ecological transition in a Mediterranean agroecosystem

    Open Access•Onofre Fullana, O Fullana Llinàs et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2021•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

Using several energy returns on investment indicators (multi-EROI), this article analyses the socioecological transition of an agroecosystem in the western Mediterranean on the island of Mallorca (Spain) over a period of 150 years which saw a change from traditional organic farming to a fossil fuel-based system of agriculture. This circular bioeconomic analysis evaluates the agroecosystem's capacity to produce goods by reproducing itself in 1860,…

  • Mercado de trabajo, género y especialización oleícola

Open Access•Gabriel Jover, Joana Maria Pujadas-Mora•ARTICLE•Historia Agraria Revista de…•2019•Referencias: 7

Recently, an intense historiographical debate has developed concerning female participation in rural labour markets and its impact on the gender wage gap before 1800. The underlying hypothesis is that increased participation of women in the labour market should lead to a reduction in the wage gap and a parallel improvement in their life conditions. However, research results to date are inconclusive. This article aims to address some of these issu…

  • Building an annual series of English wheat production in an intriguing era (1645-1761)

    Open Access•José Luis Martínez-González, Gabriel Jover et al.•ARTICLE•Historia Agraria Revista de…•2019•Referencias: 11

This article presents a method for estimating an annual series of English wheat production in physical units during the intriguing period of 1645-1761, when the English Agricultural Revolution began. It is based on Davenant’s Law and the assumption of a decrease in long-term crop variability, taking into account the yields obtained from probate inventories and farm accounts. The exercise confirms the idea that the King-Davenant accounting of the …

  • From feudal colonization to agrarian capitalism in Mallorca

Open Access•Enric Tello, Gabriel Jover et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Agrarian Change•2018•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 101

The colonization of Mallorca gave rise to a late-feudal agrarian society that evolved towards capitalism based on large estates owned by noblemen who hired large numbers of wage labourers from among smallholders living in agro-towns, the dispossessed remnants of a formerly wealthier peasantry. These well-off peasants originated from when the colonization frontier was open in the 13th and 14th centuries, but had been defeated when three peasant-pl…

    Gabriel Jover, Gabriel Jover-Avellà•ARTICLE•Histoire & Mesure•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

This paper proposes a detailed measurement of the agricultural development of the island of Majorca from the late sixteenth century to the midnineteenth century, with an emphasis on the products which made up the bulk of the island's agricultural production. The authors have organized most of the existing databases in the island's archives and have also incorporated quantitative and qualitative material from their own research and that of other c…

  • Colonización feudal y organización del territorio. Mallorca, 1230–1350
