Prevalence of adverse childhood experiences among students with emotional and behavioral difficulties or disorders - A multi-level meta-analysis
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) significantly impact students' health. Studies have shown a dose-response relationship between ACEs on the one hand, and behavioral and mental health problems, and poor school outcomes on the other. However, there is a notable gap in understanding the ACE prevalence in primary and secondary school students with emotional/behavioral difficulties or disorders (EBD). Therefore, we analyzed data of 569,731 student…
Development and socialization of self-regulation from infancy to adolescence
Self-regulation has been intensely studied across developmental science disciplines in virtue of its significance to understanding and fostering adaptive functioning throughout life. Whereas research has predominantly focused on self-regulatory abilities, age-related changes in goals and motivation that underlie self-regulation have been largely neglected. In a systematic meta-review, we disentangle the development of self-regulatory abilities fr…
The Role of Personal Resilience and Interpersonal Support in Building Fulfilling and Prosocial Lives
Despite growing interest in strength-based rehabilitation frameworks, relevant internal/external resources that are likely to facilitate the rehabilitation of detained female adolescents (DFA) have been understudied. This study aims to fill this gap by studying the role of young women’s personal resilience and interpersonal support in building fulfilling and prosocial lives 4 years after youth detention, thereby examining the strength-based good …
Breaking the chains? The effects of training a shelter dog in prison on criminal behavior and recidivism
The effectiveness of Dutch Cell Dogs (DCD), a prison-based dog training program, in reducing criminal behavior and recidivism was assessed in a quasi-experimental study in twelve correctional facilities in the Netherlands (N = 241). DCD is a program in which incarcerated offenders train a shelter dog bi-weekly for eight weeks. Results demonstrated that DCD (n = 121) did not outperform treatment-as-usual (TAU; n = 120) in official recidivism outco…
A Quasi-Experimental Study on the Effectiveness of Dutch Cell Dogs in Incarcerated Youth
This study examined the effectiveness of Dutch Cell Dogs (DCD), a prison-based dog training program that aims to improve socioemotional functioning of incarcerated youth by giving them the opportunity to train a shelter dog. Primary (aggression and institutional infractions) and secondary (wellbeing and therapeutic functioning) outcomes were assessed for the intervention ( n = 61) and comparison group ( n = 77) before the start of DCD, after 4 we…
Effects of Awareness Programs on Juvenile Delinquency
Juvenile awareness programs, such as Scared Straight, remain in use despite the finding that these programs provoke rather than prevent delinquency. The aim of this study was to examine what program components are associated with program effectiveness, which is important for improving these programs. A three-level meta-analysis was conducted. A literature search yielded 13 independent studies ( N = 1,536) from which 88 effect sizes could be extra…
Who Lets the Dog In? Differential Effects of a Dog-Training Program for Incarcerated Adults
This quasi-experimental study examined the short-term effectiveness of Dutch Cell Dogs (DCD), a short prison-based dog-training program, on anti-social behavioral and wellbeing outcomes of incarcerated adults (n = 138; men = 133; women = 5). Little is known about the responsivity of subgroups–and the prerequisites of change–in dog-training programs (DTPs). Therefore, the role of moderators (age, cultural background, correctional facility type) an…
Are We Barking Up the Right Tree? A Meta-Analysis on the Effectiveness of Prison-Based Dog Programs
Prison-based Dog Programs (PBDPs) are used in correctional facilities to decrease recidivism and improve social-emotional functioning. The aim of this meta-analysis was to provide an overview of the effectiveness of PBDPs, accounting for the potential influence of study, program, and sample characteristics through moderator analyses. We included 11 manuscripts, seven published and four unpublished, yielding 93 effect sizes ( N = 3,013). Eight stu…
Risk factors for child sexual abuse victimization
Experiencing child sexual abuse (CSA) is a major public health problem with serious consequences for CSA victims. For effective assessment and (preventive) intervention, knowledge on risk factors and their effects is crucial. Here, the aim was to synthesize research on associations between (putative) risk factors and CSA victimization. In total, 765 (putative) risk factors were extracted from 72 studies, which were classified into 35 risk domains…
Social skills training (SST) effects on social information processing skills in justice-involved adolescents

Validity and Reliability of the Attachment Insecurity Screening Inventory (Aisi) 2–5 Years
The Attachment Insecurity Screening Inventory (AISI) 2-5 years is a parent-report questionnaire for assessing attachment insecurity in preschoolers. Validity and reliability of the AISI 2-5 years were examined in a general sample ( n = 429) and in a clinical sample ( n = 71). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) confirmed a three-factor model of avoidant, ambivalent/resistant and disorganized attachment, and one higher-order factor of total attachm…
Detained girls' treatment engagement over time
The association between childhood maltreatment, mental health problems, and aggression in justice‐involved boys
The link between childhood maltreatment and adolescent aggression is well documented; yet, studies examining potential mechanisms that explain this association are limited. In the present study, we tested the association between childhood maltreatment and adolescent aggression in boys in juvenile justice facilities (N = 767) and examined the contribution of mental health problems to this relationship. Data on childhood maltreatment, mental health…

A Meta-analysis of Attachment to Parents and Delinquency

Objectives: We evaluated a new attachment-oriented intervention aimed at improving parental mind-mindedness, promoting positive parent–child relationships, and reducing child psychopathology in families with adopted children. Method: The sample consisted of 20 families with adopted children (2–5 years of age). After the pretest, the intervention was conducted, followed by a posttest, 6 months later. Results: Positive medium-to-large changes betwe…
