  • Earnings Management in Domestic and Foreign IPOs in the United States

Igor Filatotchev, Jonathan Jona et al.•ARTICLE•European Accounting Review•2020

Using a large sample of domestic and foreign IPOs in the US, we investigate how threats of enforcement by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and private litigation influence earnings management in IPO prospectuses. We propose that perceptions of foreign institutions may influence SEC enforcement action and private litigation. We provide evidence that enforcement and litigation threats are negatively related to the strength of legal inst…

  • The Oxford Handbook of Sovereign Wealth Funds

Douglas J Cumming, Douglas Cumming et al.•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook of Sovereign…•2017

Sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) represent both an increasingly important—and potentially dominant—category of alternative investor, and a novel form for governments to project their interests both at home and abroad. As such, they represent both economic actors and embody power vested in the financial and diplomatic resources they can leverage. Although at times they have acted in concert with other alternative investors, their intergenerational sa…

  • Ownership, financial strategy and performance

    David M Higgins, David Higgins et al.•ARTICLE•Business History•2015•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 24

This article assesses the validity of John Maynard Keynes' claim that the Lancashire cotton industry failed to restructure because the banks as debt holders prevented firms exiting the industry, creating persistent over-capacity. Using case studies from a substantial sample of Lancashire firms, the article explores archival evidence to establish their financial characteristics, to examine their equity and debt finance and the governance roles of …

  • The Oxford Handbook of Corporate Governance

D Allcock, Mike Wright et al.•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook of Corporate…•2013

Corporate governance has slowly become a popular topic since it emerged sometime during the 1970s. The Oxford Handbook of Corporate Governance is a collection of various academic studies of corporate governance which cover some of its striking features and aspects. These studies look at corporate governance using different perspectives, including organizational behavior, economics, and accounting. Different theoretical perspectives that are relat…

  • Exporting Activity in Transitional Economies

Trevor Buck, Igor Filatotchev et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2000

This study represents the first enterprise level analysis of the determinants of exporting in transitional economies, and focuses on privatised manufacturing firms in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Employing models developed from the existing literature on enterprise-level trade, results derived from longitudinal data suggest that the most important influences on a firm's decision to export are company size and the non-monotonic, curvilinear influe…

  • Globalisation and Trade

Oliver Morrissey, Igor Filatotchev•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2000

Why has growth, especially in exports, in low-income developing and transitional countries been low relative to the rest of the world? Why is it that such countries appear not to be benefiting from globalisation? These are the questions addressed by the studies in this collection, and the answers can underpin new approaches to export promotion. Policies to promote investment - in firms, in labour, in infrastructure - are at least as important as …

  • Privatisation and buy‐outs in the USSR

Igor Filatotchev, Trevor Buck et al.•ARTICLE•Soviet Studies•1992•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 3

THE NEED FOR FUNDAMENTAL REFORM in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe is well recognised; so too are the problems of transition to a market economy.1 Nowhere is this more evident than in the USSR, which is under pressure from Western governments and lenders to harden and accelerate economic reforms. Great problems exist in respect of a need for major capital investment, the development of managerial and entrepreneurial skills, the extent…
