We present a detailed framework for understanding the numerous and complicated interactions among psychological and social determinants of pain through examination of the process of pain communication. The focus is on an improved understanding of immediate dyadic transactions during painful events in the context of broader social phenomena. Performance-Based and Self-Reported Physical Functioning in Low-Functioning Older Persons
This prospective cohort study examines the impact of depressive symptoms on changes in self-reported physical functioning in 574 low-functioning older persons. The data were collected in two waves in 1993 and 1995. Initial levels of depressive symptoms were not predictive for subsequent change in self-reported physical functioning. The Pain Catastrophizing Scale
In Study 1, the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) was administered to 425 undergraduates. Analyses yielded a three component solution comprising (a) rumination, (b) magnification, and (c) helpless-ness. In Study 2, 30 undergraduate participants were classified as catastrophizers (n = 15) or non-catastrophizers (n = 15) on the basis of their PCS scores and participated in an cold pressor proce-dure. This study investigated what type of information reduces stigmatization of schizophrenia. Subjects were presented with one of six varying descriptions of a hypothetical case in which a target individual had recovered from a mental disorder. Subjects were asked if they knew someone with a mental illness. Those individuals who had no previous contact perceived the mentally ill as dangerous and chose to maintain a greater social distance from them. …

Medicaid has been expanded by Congress, forcing states to provide a broader array of health benefits to more recipients. Effects of Offenders' and Victims' Characteristics on Severity of Punishment
244 undergraduates read a transcript of a murder case, then made recommendations for treatment of the offender. In Exp. 1, length of sentence for a convicted murderer was unrelated to his mode of attire. In Exp. 2, sentences were unrelated to intention but were longer with than without a motive. In Exp. 3, punishment was not consistently related to the victim's gender. Suggestions for research are given
