One Village, One Dam and development politics in northern Ghana
To increase water access in Ghana’s arid, northern agricultural communities, the Ghanaian government initiated the One Village, One Dam (1V1D) project in 2017. Under 1V1D, the government planned to construct or repair over 570 small-scale dams across northern regions, where water scarcity and social-ecological vulnerabilities are particularly high. Between 2008 and 2016, more than 50,000 Chinese citizens migrated to Ghana to mine gold on small-scale concessions. This is particularly surprising given that small-scale mining is an activity reserved for Ghanaian citizens. Buruli ulcer is a necrotizing skin infection that largely affects poor people in the tropics. In Ghana, federal policies promise free treatment to all individuals with the disease. Yet, this research found there is a tension between official policy narratives and the lived experiences of people in endemic regions.
