Staff Burnout Prevention and Mitigation Protocol for Research Studies on Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence
There is an increasing focus on sexual violence (SV) and intimate partner violence (IPV) in public health research, including epidemiological, prevention, and intervention studies. Although critical institutional structures and policies exist for the protection of research participants, less consideration is given to the well-being of research staff in academic and medical research settings, including risk of burnout and vicarious trauma. No wide…
Couples-based interventions for perinatal depression and anxiety
Background: Globally, perinatal depression and anxiety affect approximately 26% and 12% of women, respectively, with partner support recognized as a protective factor. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the evidence on the effectiveness of couples-based interventions for perinatal depression and/or anxiety. Methods: We searched PsycINFO, Embase, PubMed, CENTRAL, and CINAHL from inception through December 1, 2024, identifying studies publi…
Implementation and evaluation of a family planning intervention engaging mothers-in-law of young women in India
BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that mothers-in-law (MILs) influence daughters-in-law's (DILs) fertility and family planning decisions in South Asia, emphasizing early fertility and male grandchildren, few reproductive health interventions engage MILs directly. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and qualitative impact of a reproductive health and life skill-based intervention on MILs in tribal Rajasthan, India, using a mixed-met…
Effects of economic empowerment and relationship strengthening intervention on financial behaviors among couples living with HIV

Psychometric Validation of Trust, Commitment, and Satisfaction Scales to Measure Marital Relationship Quality Among Newly Married Women in Nepal
Marital relationship quality significantly influences health outcomes, but validated measurement tools for South Asian populations remain limited. To validate scales measuring trust, commitment, and satisfaction as key components of marital relationship quality among newly married women in Nepal, we conducted a two-wave psychometric validation study in rural Nawalparasi district. The study included 200 newly married women aged 18-25 years, with 1…
Marital choice, spousal communication, and contraceptive self-efficacy and use among newly married girls in India
Our study demonstrated that girls' involvement in spouse selection was associated with improved spousal communication, greater contraceptive self-efficacy, and increased contraceptive use, with significant contextual differences. Findings emphasized the critical role of girls' agency in marital decisions and effective spousal communication in increasing contraceptive use tailored to specific contexts among newly married girls in India
Perinatal depression and adverse child growth outcomes in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs)
Perinatal depression (PND), which encompasses the antepartum and postpartum depression (APD and PPD), is a neglected crisis in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We aimed to systematically search and meta-analyze existing evidence to determine whether a mother’s PND affects adverse growth outcomes in children in LMICs (PROSPERO protocol: CRD42021246803). We conducted searches, including nine databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science,…
Association between coordinated counseling from both Asha and Anganwadi Workers and maternal health outcomes
Community Health Workers (CHWs) play crucial roles in health promotion and services in rural India. Previous research investigating the effectiveness of coordinated health promotion by different community health workers (CHWs) cadres on health practices is scarce. This study examines the effectiveness of coordinated health promotion by different CHW cadres, specifically Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and Anganwadi Workers (AWW), on mat…
MHealth interventions for postpartum family planning in LMICs
The unmet need for family planning is a pervasive public health concern in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Mobile health (mHealth) interventions have been designed and implemented in LMIC settings to address this issue through health information dissemination via voice calls, apps, and short message services (SMS). Although the impact of mHealth programmes on postpartum family planning outcomes have been systematically reviewed, th…
Markets, incentives, and health promotion can improve family planning and maternal health practices
NCT05725278 at clinicaltrials.gov (retrospective); 13/02/2023
A longitudinal study of the role of spousal relationship quality and mother-in-law relationship quality on women’s depression in rural Nepal
Nepal has high prevalence of early marriage and remains a patrilocal society with women moving into their husbands' home after marriage. Spousal relationship quality can be an important predictor of health and mental well-being of married women in a patriarchal setting like Nepal but is understudied in this population. We examined the association between spousal relationship quality, mother-in-law relationship quality and mental health among newl…
Contemporary pathways to adolescent pregnancy in Indonesia
In the last decade, reduction in adolescent fertility rates in Indonesia has slowed despite national programmes and policies focused on addressing child marriage. Indonesia currently has the highest number of births to adolescent girls aged 15–19 years in Southeast Asia. There is a need to develop a more nuanced understanding of the drivers of adolescent pregnancy in Indonesia to inform programmes and policies tailored to young people’s needs and…
The relationship between the gendered norm of eating last and mental health of newly married women in Nepal
Eating last is a gendered cultural norm in which the youngest daughters-in-law are expected to eat last after serving others in the household, including men and in-laws. Using women's eating last as an indicator of women's status, we studied the association between eating last and women's mental health. Using four rounds of prospective cohort data of 18-25-year-old newly married women (n = 200) cohabiting with mothers-in-law between 2018 and 2020…
The Role of Gender Norms on Intimate Partner Violence Among Newly Married Adolescent Girls and Young Women in India
Gender norms have been posited to impact intimate partner violence (IPV), but there is scant evidence of the longitudinal association between community-level gender norms and IPV. Using longitudinal data on 3,965 married girls surveyed in India, we fitted mixed-effects ordinal and binary logistic regression models for physical IPV intensity and occurrence of sexual IPV. We found a 26% increase in the odds that women experience frequent physical I…
Can digitally enabling community health and nutrition workers improve services delivery to pregnant women and mothers of infants? Quasi-experimental evidence from a national-scale nutrition programme …
BACKGROUND: India's 1.4 million community health and nutrition workers (CHNWs) serve 158 million beneficiaries under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programme. We assessed the impact of a data capture, decision support, and job-aid mobile app for the CHNWs on two primary outcomes-(1) timeliness of home visits and (2) appropriate counselling specific to the needs of pregnant women and mothers of children <12 months. METHODS: We us…

Bringing juvenile justice and public health systems together to meet the sexual and reproductive health needs of justice-involved youth
18) with juvenile justice (JJ) and public health (PH) system stakeholders between December 2015 and January 2017. Results suggest both PH and JJ stakeholders perceive CINI youth as having substantial, largely unmet SRH care needs due to a lack of services, policies, or procedures to address these needs. Barriers to implementing programs and policies to improve SRH services for this population include limited resources (e.g., staffing, time); perc…
The Ethical Implications of Using Social Media to Engage and Retain Justice-Involved Youth in Behavioral Health Research
Given its popularity among youth ages 13-17, social media is a promising avenue for engaging and retaining historically hard-to-reach youth in longitudinal research. Social media use in longitudinal research involving youth, however, has preceded development of best practices for ethical use. This article describes the ethical challenges and considerations of using social media to engage and retain youth within the context of a randomized control…
