Wandering Waste
The intention of this paper is to provide an exploration of how municipal solid waste systems generate or accelerate social inequality. Waste can produce inferiority not only among people, but also in landscapes. To achieve this aim, this research focuses on undocumented Afghan migrants in Tehran, Iran, who work as waste pickers. The analysis is chiefly based on the results of the archaeological garbage project conducted in Tehran and on my visit…

Why Women Are Absent from Political and Economic Histories
Women and the Politics of Resistance in the Iranian Constitutional Revolution
From moon-faced amrads to farangi-looking women
Wandering Islands1
The growing rate of global inequality, on the one hand, and hyper-consumerism, particularly among higher socio-economic classes in developed countries, on the other, have resulted in the emergence of new forms of subsistence, lifestyles and settlement types where subaltern groups and populations live and work. This paper investigates the emergence of two of these kinds of settlement in Tehran, Iran, that have developed based on the intersection o…
Flowers in the Garbage
The archaeology of garbage project was conducted in 2017-18 to investigate the daily garbage of inhabitants of two districts of Tehran. Among the discarded materials, we recognized scattered evidence of prostitutes’ daily life. Finding such evidence gave us an alibi to work on the historical documents in order to trace the patterns of prostitution in nineteenth-century Tehran. In this article, we configure “the geography of prostitution” and the …
Unfinished narratives. Some remarks on the archaeology of the contemporary past in Iran
This paper discusses the emergence of an archaeology of the contemporary era in a Middle Eastern country, Iran. Far from North America and Europe, where the subfield was introduced, appreciated and developed by academic archaeologists, this archaeology is now also becoming established in Iran in spite of academic reluctance and (indirect) political pressure. The most encouraged form of archaeology in Iran remains nationalist and conservative, sup…

Exchange System Patterns in Bam, Southeastern Iran, after the Earthquake (December 2003)
Bam, a city located in southeastern Iran, was dramatically destroyed in a 6.8 (Mw) earthquake on December 26, 2003. As a result of the earthquake, more than half the city residents of this local trade center died and more than 80 percent of Bam market shops, retailers, and wholesalers suffered damage. The businesses also experienced long-term closure, as well as the emigration and immigration of traders. The damage to the Bam market influenced al…
The archaeology of last night … what happened in Bam (Iran) on 25–6 December 2003
Bam residents have lived for years in their city in south-eastern Iran, engaging in palm cultivation and trade. However, a dramatic change occurred on 26 December 2003 – a 6.8 MW earthquake. Five years after the earthquake, six houses were excavated to reconstruct the reaction of people to it and to explore their longer-term life paths. This is our narrative of some Bam families that were victims of the disaster. An archaeological narration looks…
