  • “Beyond the State: First-Person Ethics and the Governance of Targeted Therapies in China”

Open Access•Isabel Briz Hernández, Yuki Ishihara et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2026

The development of targeted therapies sits at the intersection of cutting-edge science, patient care, and complex social dynamics. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in China between 2018 and 2020, this paper discusses how experimental targeted therapies are governed not only by formal regulations but also by the ethical judgments of non-state actors. Two vignettes illuminate this argument: first, the encounter between a prominent biotec…

  • Miscellaneous Care: Bridging the In-between of Translational Medicine

    Open Access•Isabel Briz Hernández•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•2025•Referencias: 50

Based on fieldwork in China on oncology clinical trials for immunotherapy which involve foreign patients as trial subjects, in this paper, I illustrate how the source material needed for the trial (the patient’s T cells) is a scarce biological substance that needs to be generated and crafted though the efforts of patients, doctors, nurses, or lab technicians, as well as other staff: chauffeurs, translators, and foreign patient coordinators. Among…

  • The genomic promise of cancer as "not-yet-treatable" and the moral burden of "trying

    Open Access•Isabel Briz Hernández•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2025•Referencias: 29

While work on the "political economy of hope" has already extensively researched the relation between biomedical technology and hope, I delve into oth…
