Pleistocene Archaeology in the Flinders Range
Research is conducted in the early stone industry known as the Kartan in the Flinders Range to study its dating and associations. In the northern Flinders range and along creeks near the shores of Lake Frome, there are sites of at least reasonable antiquity some of which have artefacts in their natural form in Pleistocene deposits dating back to 20,000 BP and the tools they contain could be a local expression of the Kartan industry

Excavations at a number of sites in Australia during recent years have allowed prehistorians to recognise two major stone working traditions: an early tradition of large tools and a late tradition of small tools. Between Erith and Dover there is what is known among the local fisherman as 'The Swashway', a low spit of pebbles linking the two islands at low tide but covered by broken surf at other times. Overlooking this swashway is a saddle some 40-50m above sea level mantled with deep sand deposits, part of which is now being scoured away by the wind. It was here that the first flake had been found, and we quickly confirmed this find by discovering about …
