Reflexive Serendipity. Grounded Theory and Serendipity in Disaster Management and Military Research
Grounded Theory (GT) is a research method that allows the researcher to make discoveries without a priori knowledge, and allows an open mind not an empty head. The use of this method is also desirable for serendipity to occur in the research process. This article therefore aims to chronologically present how serendipity has grown over time in the use of the GT method in a field of research focusing on highly demanding conditions such as disaster …
Becoming a Swedish military ranger
The armed forces in virtually all countries are traditionally male-dominated organisations. Military rangers constitute an elite unit whose chief skills and capabilities centre on unconventional warfare and intelligence gathering in enemy territory, as well as conducting low-intensity warfare. The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the process of becoming a military ranger and what it means to be one in this context from …
Tough, sensitive and sincere
This study aimed to explore adolescent boys' views of masculinity and emotion management and their potential effects on well-being. Interviews with 33 adolescent boys aged 16-17 years in Sweden were analysed using grounded theory. We found two main categories of masculine conceptions in adolescent boys: gender-normative masculinity with emphasis on group-based values, and non-gender-normative masculinity based on personal values. Gender-normative…
Psychosomatic symptoms and low psychological well-being in relation to employment status
Elements of social capital, particularly social support, might be important health-protective factors among individuals who are unemployed
The buffering effect of tangible social support on financial stress
Social support had its strongest effect at high levels of financial stress. The question whether the altering of our social networks may improve physical health is important for the prevention of ill health in people experiencing financial stress. Strengthening social networks may have the potential to influence health-care costs and improve quality of life
Financial stress in late adulthood and diverse risks of incident cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality in women and men
Financial stress may increase the risks of incident CVD and all-cause mortality, especially among men. Furthermore these risks are likely to be greater in men living in single households and in women without cash margins. Living with a partner seems to protect men, but not women, from ill-health associated with financial stress due to the lack of a cash margin
In or Out’—On the Dynamic between Acceptance and Rejection and its Influence on Health in Adolescent Girls
Adolescent girls’ subjective health, or well-being, is of international concern as the frequency of psychological and psychosomatic complaints is continuously increasing in several countries world-wide. The causes of this development are still obscure. The aim of this study was to explore well-being and strategies for increased well-being among adolescent girls. Grounded Theory method was used, in which in-depth interviews were held with 18 adole…
Unresolved conflicts and shaming processes
Mental illness is the most common diagnosis resulting in long-term sick leave in Sweden today, especially stress-related syndromes and mood disorders. The aim of this article is to analyse the relational and emotional processes in the workplace that may contribute to the understanding of long-term sick leave for mental-health reasons. We conducted interviews with twenty-six people who were on sick-leave because of diagnoses of mental ill-health. …

BMI and psychological distress in 68, 000 Swedish adults
Psychological distress decreases with increasing age regardless of BMI; a pattern more obvious for women. Being categorized with obesity II leads to a markedly higher psychological distress than being categorized with normal weight, overweight or obesity I. From this, we suggest that future obesity research focusing on psychological distress could investigate the role of stigma and norm susceptibility in relationships where people are evaluated t…
Social capital in relation to depression, musculoskeletal pain, and psychosomatic symptoms
The findings make an important contribution to the social capital - health debate by demonstrating relations between social capital factors and self-reported ill health in a young population
Sense of coherence and psychological well-being
BACKGROUND: Psychological well-being is important for individuals, communities and health services throughout the world because of the costs associated with psychological ill-health and the loss of quality of life for those affected and their relatives. Following a salutogenic approach, there is a link between health-promoting resources, such as generalised resistance resources and a positive state of health. Generalised resistance resources have…
Mental health symptoms in relation to socio-economic conditions and lifestyle factors – a population-based study in Sweden
Our results support the notion that a ground for good mental health includes balance in social relations, in domestic work and in employment as well as in personal economy both among men and women. In addition, physical inactivity, underweight and risk consumption of alcohol are associated with mental health symptoms independent of socio-economic factors
Social status and shaming experiences related to adolescent overt aggression at school
Feelings of rejection and humiliation in interpersonal interaction are strongly related to aggressive behavior. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between social status, shaming experiences, gender and adolescent aggressive behavior by using a status–shaming model. A population‐based sample of 5,396 adolescents aged from 15 to 18 completed a questionnaire that asked questions regarding psychosocial background, shaming experi…
Status incongruence revisited
Status incongruence has been related to poor health and all-cause mortality, and could be a growing public health problem due to changes in the labour market in later decades. Shaming experiences have been suggested as playing a part in the aetiology. The aim here was to study the risk for shaming experiences, pessimism, anxiety, depressive feelings, and poor mental wellbeing (as measured by the GHQ) with a special focus on shame, in four social …
Financial Stress, Shaming Experiences and Psychosocial Ill-Health
In the shadow of the welfare society ill-health and symptoms, psychological exposure and lifestyle habits among social security recipients
BACKGROUND: In Sweden social security is a means-tested financial allowance. The Social Services Act states that an individual is entitled to financial support when his/her needs are not met in any other way. The aim of the present study was to analyse the prevalence and impact of various illness factors and symptoms in social security recipients compared to non-recipients in a welfare state, in this case Sweden. METHODS: A simple random sample o…
Long-Term Sickness Absence Due to Burnout
In the late 1990s, there was a marked increase in Sweden in long-term sickness absence with mental diagnoses. In the extensive research on burnout, little attention has been paid to the link with sickness absence. Our aim in this study was to discover what caused burnout, or such severe stress that it led to long-term sickness absence (> 28 days). We interviewed 32 individuals on long-term sickness absence with a diagnosis of burnout and used gro…

Alcohol‐related problems among adolescents and the role of a sense of coherence
Alcohol abuse is generally regarded as a major risk factor for antisocial problem behaviour among adolescents. On the other hand, personal coping strategies hypothetically can be seen as protective of alcohol‐related behaviour problems. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of sense of coherence (SOC) on alcohol‐related behavioural problems in an SOC‐alcohol intoxication model. The method of study was a cross‐sectional, school‐based …

Sense of coherence during unemployment
The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between different forms of hardship during unemployment and the sense of coherence (SOC). These hardships were considered in the framework of the finances–shame model, which has been developed to help provide a greater understanding of why unemployment is so painful to some whilst others are hardly affected by it. The hypothesis in this study was that the greater the financial hardships during…
Financial Hardship and Shame
Young unemployed people in six local communities in Sweden were interviewed to test the assumption that variations in the social and health effects of unemployment could be seen as a function of financial hardship and of experiences of shame. The results indicate that there seems to be a link between the health and social effects of unemployment, on the one hand, and the degree of financial hardship and the number of shaming experiences on the ot…

Unemployment and Health in Sweden
The unemployment rate for a country seems to reflect unemployment policies rather than economic conditions. Variations in employment rates for selected Western countries are presented as a background for a discussion of unemployment and its individual and societal consequences in Sweden. Unemployment is both a private trouble—where individuals see the possibility of controlling their own lives diminishing, which leads to increased risk for psycho…

Informal solutions to the health and social consequences of unemployment
Mills' (1959) distinction between private troubles and public issues are applied on a theoretical level to the phenomenon of unemployment. The role of the trade unions is discussed in that context, as is stress and control theory. An intervention project is described where 17 unemployed people were recruited to serve as representatives of their fellow unemployed. The aim was to serve as their advocates and spokesmen in relation to the authorities…

Routinization of stress control programmes in organizations
The aim of the study was to design and evaluate a stress control programme which can be carried out by employees in work organizations without direct assistance from specialists. The target group was Swedish high school teachers. Using a two-step model, so called health teams at six high schools were trained by a specialist. A health team is usually comprised of three to five voluntarily recruited persons, generally a school nurse and a few teach…
Ill health and social conditions amongst migrants and refugees—the case of Sweden
The present article delineates the state of health and socioeconomic situation of migrants and refugees in Sweden. Special attention is given to refugees. Migrants appear to have more extensive health problems and a shorter longevity span than native Swedes. The refugees constitute an especially exposed group of migrants. Experiences in the home country that relate to organised violence is a specific problem for this group. It has been estimated …
