  • Refining the Chronology of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) Settlement

Open Access•Mara A Mulrooney, Mara Mulrooney et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific Archaeology•2021

    P. C. McCoy and colleagues carried out a comprehensive survey and test excavations at selected sites in the southwestern portion of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in 1968. This included the excavation of a rectangular house (hare; 1-187) and a nearby stone-lined earth oven (umu pa‘e; 1-186) on the eastern rim of Rano Kau. A single radiocarbon date of AD 770 ± 230 from 1-187 was subsequently accepted by some researchers as support for the theory of earl…

  • Rock art on excavated monolithic statues (moai), Rano Raraku statue quarry, Rapa Nui (Easter Island)

    Open Access•Jo Anne Van Tilburg•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2021•Referencias: 19

Monolithic statues (moai) of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) are three‐dimensional objects and unique to the ancient public art of Eastern Polynesia. The primary purpose here is to summarize the specific landscape and statue production contexts of moai 156 and moai 157 in Rano Raraku, the statue quarry, demonstrating that they are embellished with rock art applied post‐production (sixteenth to seventeenth centuries) and after they were upright and parti…

  • Carved komari (vulva) stones from Rapa Nui

Adrienne L Kaeppler, Jo Anne Van Tilburg•ARTICLE•Journal of the Polynesian Society•2020

The authors examine selected stone objects in the J.L. Young Collection, Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu. Two were named by Young "Maea Momoa" (ma'ea momoa; lit. 'stone for chickens'). One of the ma'ea momoa is a "pillow stone" (ŋarua) or basaltic beach cobble incised with komari (vulva motifs). The other is a "Bar of stone" lavishly embellished with similar motifs. Six other objects are said to be "fetish stones". A possible 'Orongo provenanc…

  • Geochemical and radiometric analyses of archaeological remains from Easter Island’s moai (statue) quarry reveal prehistoric timing, provenance, and use of fine–grain basaltic resources

Open Access•Dale Simpson, Dale Fredrick Simpson Jr et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific Archaeology•2018

Pacific and Rapa Nui (Easter Island) volcanologists and geologists have set the stage for the island’s archaeologists working in lithic sourcing studies by providing practical data regarding the island geodynamic activity, geomorphological formation and dating, and the macroscopic, microscopic, and elemental proprieties of Easter Island stone. Drawing upon this information, and the research collaboration between two active archaeological projects…

  • Beyond the Rim

Jo Anne Van Tilburg•ARTICLE•Journal of the Polynesian Society•2014•Referencias: 2

The article presents a detailed comparative study of kava mixing bowls associated with the cultural complex of the West Polynesian kava-circle and its Fijian yaqona circle offshoot. By cross-referencing archaeological evidence, documented collection histories and bowl typologies a clearer picture emerges of the centres where the bowls were produced and the formal evolution of these vessels, and also illustrates in a unique way how different group…

  • Respect for Rapa Nui

    Open Access•Jo Anne Van Tilburg•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1990•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 2

Writing in 1968, archaeologist William Mulloy rightfully called Easter Island (Rapa Nui) an 'outdoor archaeological museum of unique significance'. Indeed, the potential value of the island's archaeological sites and their import for the island's tourist economy meant that sites were touted as museum displays worthy of preservation, restoration and curation (Mulloy & Figueroa G.-H. 1966; Mulloy 1968: iii). That value encouraged successful funding…

  • Symbolic stratigraphy

Jo Anne Van Tilburg, Georgia Lee•ARTICLE•World Archaeology•1987•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 6

Recent field work on Easter Island, East Polynesia, has collected new data on monolithic statue sites, rock art design motifs and the ideological significance of their temporal and spatial relationships. This paper details what is currently known about the re‐use of statue sites post A.D. 1500, and describes the occurrence of rock art on statue, ceremonial architecture (ahu) and quarry sites. In particular, it is postulated that the superimpositi…
