Blending tradition and modernity
This study examines the design and delivery of gastronomic experiences at restaurants of High Peruvian cuisine. Besides the presentation of creative dishes, food is also used to communicate a discourse of authenticity and innovation. Changes in local cuisine were originally initiated by a group of chefs who received education or work experience abroad and later decided to return to Peru to open their own businesses. The aim was to identify partic…
The Recursive Outcomes of the Multiracial Movement and the End of American Racial Categories
After a protracted national discussion about racial mixture in the early 1990s, the Office of Management and Budget made the unprecedented decision in 1997 to allow Americans to “mark one or more” racial categories on the 2000 census. A small “multiracial movement” provoked this fundamental change in the way the government collects racial data. This case study shows that even very small and modest social movements can have profound effects on pub…
Black Political Interests on Immigrant Rights
Immigrant Rights in a Deep South City
In 2010, the Alabama GOP took control of the state legislature for the first time since Reconstruction. The next year, in a sharply partisan vote, the legislature passed, and Governor Robert Bentley (R) signed into law, the Beason-Hammon Alabama Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act, also known as House Bill 56, the harshest immigration law in the country. This punitive state law was the impetus for Black elites in Birmingham to frame the immigrati…
Exploring the contribution of public art to the tourist experience in Istanbul, Ravenna and New York
The appeal of art within the tourist experience is often associated with works of art in galleries and museums. The attraction of art, including architecture, which is found in urban public spaces, such as parks, churches and squares and is largely not interpreted for visitors, receives less attention, despite its ubiquitousness in cities around the world. This article explores the role of public art in the tourist experience using comparative ca…

Methods. We analyzed cross-sectional data from the Supplement to HIV and AIDS Surveillance Project for 2038 HIV-positive Black men who reported being sexually active. We classified the participants by their reported sexual behav…
Mark One or More
The movement to add a multiracial category to the 2000 U.S. Census provoked unprecedented debates about race. The effort made for strange bedfellows. Republicans like House Speaker Newt Gingrich and affirmative action opponent Ward Connerly took up the multiracial cause. Civil rights leaders opposed them, warning that the movement could dilute the census count of traditional minority groups. The activists themselves - a loose confederation of org…
Multiracialism & the civil rights future
the 1990s, the American system of racial classi1⁄2cation changed recently in a conceptually bold way. With moving reference to the self-esteem of their children, along with the moral conviction that multiracial recognition could help the entire nation beyond an impasse, multiracial advocates were astonishingly successful in the 1990s. Yet at the height of activity, the multiracial movement involved no more than a thousand individuals, mainly livi…
States, Parties, and Social Movements
Studies of social movements and of political parties have usually treated them as separate and distinct. In fact they are deeply intertwined. Social movements often shape electoral competition and party policies; they can even give rise to new parties. At the same time, political parties and campaigns shape the opportunities, personnel, and outcomes of social movements. In many countries, electoral democracy itself is the outcome of social moveme…
