  • What Is HPSR? A Mixed Methods Approach to Analyzing an Emergent Field With Fluid Boundaries

Open Access•George Weisz, Alberto Cambrosio et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Background Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR) is closely tied to the World Health Organization. However, it overlaps with several other disciplines and research domains seeking to influence health policy. Because it is not recognized as a distinct field in bibliographical databases, it is difficult to isolate its work from that of other domains covering similar issues. Methods We utilize bibliometric and scientometric approaches that cover…

  • The World Health Organization and the Struggle to Coordinate Global Health Research

    Open Access•George Weisz•ARTICLE•Minerva•2025•Referencias: 6

As part of its mandate as the normative authority over Global Health, the World Health Organization is responsible for research to improves health worldwide. Since the 1970s, the organization has sought to find ways to promote scientific collaboration and coordination among actors who fund and do research. It has been hampered in this task by its own institutional weaknesses, fragmentation of the huge medical research field and, since the 1990s, …

  • The World Health Organization and the global standardization of medical training, a history

    Open Access•George Weisz, Beata Nannestad•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2021

BACKGROUND: This article presents a history of efforts by the World Health Organization and its most important ally, the World Federation for Medical Education, to strengthen and standardize international medical education. This aspect of WHO activity has been largely ignored in recent historical and sociological work on that organization and on global health generally. METHODS: Historical textual analysis is applied to the digitalized archives a…

  • Creating an Applied, Multi-disciplinary Research Field

    Open Access•George Weisz•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•2021•Citada por: 1

From the 1960s, the World Health Organization (WHO) sought to reconcile ambitious international goals with scarce resources and the socio-economic realities of low- and middle-income countries by developing a field called Health Systems Research (HSR). This field remained small, marginal and largely confined to WHO during the second half of the twentieth century. The WHO worked to promote HSR, apply it to concrete problems and define its scope an…

  • What Happened to the Global Forum for Health Research

    Open Access•George Weisz•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2020

The Global Forum for Health Research (GFHR) was founded in 1998. It was the culmination of an advocacy movement started in 1987 to campaign for the expansion and coordination of health research benefitting low- and middle-income countries. It was largely funded by the World Bank and embraced that institution's emphasis on cost effectiveness. But its small budget prevented it from assuming the central role in global health research that its suppor…

  • International Health Research and the Emergence of Global Health in the Late Twentieth Century

George Weisz, Noémi Tousignant•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the history of medicine•2019

An influential policy network emerged from two overlapping developments of the 1970s and 1980s: new research programs focusing on tropical diseases and debates about how to implement the concept of primary health care at the World Health Organization. Participating actors came together in an informal network that, by the late 1980s, expanded advocacy to include the promotion and reorganization of all forms of research that might improve health in…

  • Epidemiology and Health Care Reform

George Weisz•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011•Citada por: 4

The National Health Survey undertaken in 1935 and 1936 was the largest morbidity survey until that time. It was also the first national survey to focus on chronic disease and disability. The decision to conduct a survey of this magnitude was part of the larger strategy to reform health care in the United States. The focus on morbidity allowed reformers to argue that the health status of Americans was poor, despite falling mortality rates that sug…

  • Dr Fleck Fighting Fleck Typhus

    Open Access•George Weisz, George M Weisz•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2010

These comments contribute to the debate on Dr Ludwik Fleck, published in this journal in 2008, regarding his identification of typhus antigen in urine and its use in the preparation of a vaccine (Amsterdamska et al., 2008; Hedfors, 2008). As I understand it, Dr Fleck was on one side dismissed with various epithets and his research considered as poorly done, meaningless and with doubtful ethical value (Hedfors, 2007, 2008). It was alleged that Fle…

In 1971 Abdel R. Omran published his classic paper on the theory of epidemiologic transition. By the mid-1990s, it had become something of a citation classic and was understood as a theoretical statement about the shift from infectious to chronic diseases that supposedly accompanies modernization. However, Omran himself was not directly concerned with the rise of chronic disease; his theory was in fact closely tied to efforts to accelerate fertil…

The Medici family was prominent in Europe between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries. Their contributions to political, economic, and artistic life have remained persistent preoccupations for historians. The medical history of this family, however, was relatively neglected prior to the middle of the twentieth century, probably due to the scarcity of relevant information. Retrospective study of the diseases of the Medici has developed more int…

  • Spas, Mineral Waters, and Hydrological Science in Twentieth-Century France

    George Weisz•ARTICLE•Isis•2001•Citada por: 20

This essay examines the survival of waters therapy in twentieth-century France with a view to understanding the conditions that make a therapy convincing in one national context and not in another. Part of the explanation for this survival has to do with the size and power of the spa industry. Where this industry was strong and economically powerful--as it was in France--its survival became a national priority. Of equal importance, however, was t…

Routine acceptance of use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was shattered in 2002 when results of the largest HRT randomised clinical trial, the women’s health initiative, indicated that long term use of oestrogen plus progestin HRT not only was associated with increased risk of cancer but, contrary to expectations, did not decrease, and may have increased, risk of cardiovascular disease. George Weisz•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•1994•Citada por: 6

This paper seeks to provide a systemic perspective on the development of medical specialization in France. Making use of information in medical directories of the period, it offers a quantitative analysis of developing specialization in Paris and the major provincial cities from 1880 to 1935. The first section examines the size and scope of the different specialties in 1884, 1905, 1920, and 1935. The second section analyses evolving patterns of l…

  • Regulating Specialties in France during the First Half of the Twentieth Century

    George Weisz•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•2002•Citada por: 2

France lagged several decades behind Germany and the USA in dealing with specialist certification. The reason for this delay, it is argued, has to do with the centralized, state-controlled structure of French medical institutions and with the lack of a powerful national professional association capable of taking on the task. Once such an association did appear in the late 1920s, debate within the profession began in earnest. Nonetheless, it took …

    W R Albury, George Weisz et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2001•Citada por: 1

Desiderius Erasmus set out his views on medical ethics just over 500 years ago. Applying the characteristic approach of Renaissance Humanism, he drew upon a variety of classical sources to develop his own account of medical obligation. Of particular interest is Erasmus's attention to the patient's duties as well as the physician's. By treating this reciprocal relationship as a friendship between extreme unequals, Erasmus was able to maintain the …
