  • Attitudes of Israeli Early Childhood Educators Who Work in Kibbutz, Rural Villages and Cities Towards Their Community and Its Significance for Children

    Open Access•Sigal Achituv, Orit Dror et al.•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2025•Referencias: 40

The societal context of community is of critical importance in understanding its effect on pedagogic practice in ECEC, and yet, the role of community in ECEC is taken for granted by both scholars and practitioners. Little is known about the attitudes of ECEC educators towards their communities and how they affect children. This research examines the perspectives of Israeli ECEC educators from three ecologies: Urban, village and kibbutz and the wa…

  • Design Intervention

    David Brody, David S Brody•ARTICLE•American Art•2021

Design can be understood as the planning, shaping, and altering of things, places, and experiences, so the possibilities for its study are boundless. Design is, by its very nature, inclusive. As discussed in this set of Commentaries, design can, and often does, foster discriminatory practices. Yet what is thought of as design, and its commercial connections, provides a broader sense of history, because it touches so many lives. It is the implicit…

  • Making the Contemporary Art Market More Inclusive

    David Brody•ARTICLE•Luxury•2021•Referencias: 2

While there is extensive scholarship about how the art world devises, secures, and furthers, to use Pierre Bourdieu’s term, “distinction,” in this article I connect the Bourdieuian notion of taste to the luxury act of collecting art in the twenty-first century. I contend that collecting art is a luxury experience that bifurcates class and racial divides. The very act of collecting is a cultural mechanism that furthers socio-economic division thro…

  • Painting Labor

    David Brody•ARTICLE•Women's studies quarterly•2017

The art of Los Angeles–based artist Ramiro Gomez critiques the precarious nature of domestic work. By painting figures onto the pages of luxury-oriented shelter magazines, Gomez uses his art to establish a dialogue with his viewers, where the power dynamics of race, gender, and economics become palpable. This essay considers how Gomez's art creates a subversive intervention, highlighting the invisibility of labor and the cultural stigma attached …

  • A Textbook Case

    David Brody•ARTICLE•Design and Culture•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 8

Hotel housekeeping is a designed managerial process that relies on an orchestrated system of workflows. A close analysis of housekeeping textbooks, created for future managers who take courses in hotel management, reveals that the design of housekeeping labor is integral to the industry. These design processes are also indicative of other types of design issues that are critical at hotels, such as the maintenance of what guests perceive as clean …

    David Brody, David L Brody et al.•ARTICLE•Curriculum Inquiry•2007•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 5

The resilience of teachers in the face of terror was examined in a narrative study of two Israeli kindergarten teachers over the course of one school year. During this time, there occurred frequent terror attacks as well as the threat of impending war with Iraq and the concomitant threat of chemical warfare. Each teacher’s unique pattern of coping based on her own personal theory of resilience was examined. One teacher actively processed with her…

  • Liberte et solidarite dans le droit du travail americain

    David Brody, David L Brody•ARTICLE•Le Mouvement social•2003•Referencias: 1

This comment on the whole agrees with Eric Arnesen's critique of the whiteness historical scholarship. It suggests, however, that Arnesen insufficiently credits David R. Roediger's The Wages of Whiteness: Race and the Making of the American Working Class (New York, 1991) for its achievement as a kind of charismatic history and insufficiently distinguishes between Roediger's book and the work of his emulators. • Building Empire

David Brody, David Eric Brody•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian American Studies•2001•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 3

Over the course of the late nineteenth century, American representations of the "Orient" exploded into a tangled knot of discursive possibilities. One of the more overt examples of American Orientalism from this period was the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago. The entire fair was, as architectural historian Zeynip Çelik relates, organized as an exercise in racial typology. Exhibited as homogeneous and placed at the center of the …

By offering a comparative, institutional analysis of how state-supported pensions for the elderly developed in Britain, Canada and the United States, Anna Shola Orloff aims to make a contribution to understanding the growth of modern social welfare policies. It is not enough, Orloff demonstrates, to simply examine socioeconomic factors in the growth of the welfare state. She argues that welfare policies are also shaped by the political institutio…

  • Labor History, Industrial Relations, and the Crisis of American Labor

    David Brody, David L Brody•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•1989•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 14

In this look at the disciplinary history of industrial relations and labor history, the author focuses on the long period of disassociation between the two fields and the growing contact between them in the 1980s. He suggests that industrial relations scholars became more receptive to historical modes of thought when events such as the decline in union membership (starting in the mid-1970s) and the sharp recession of 1981-82 proved that industria…
