  • Distinct acoustic properties pattern differently in a sound change in progress in Hong Kong Cantonese

Open Access•John Culnan, Suki Yiu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2022•Referencias: 1

Previous work on Hong Kong Cantonese has reported evidence of an incomplete neutralization between the labialized velar /kw/ and plain velar /k/, where both may be produced as a plain velar [k] before /ɔ/, although non-neutralized forms are also produced to some extent for some speakers (Bauer 1982, Zee 1999, To, Mcleod & Cheung 2015). The present study examines this phenomenon acoustically, and evaluates to what extent the properties of labializ…

  • Articulatory Strategies for Place Contrasts of Unreleased Final Stops on Preceding Vowels

    Open Access•Suki Yiu, Suki S Y Yiu et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2021

This ultrasound study examines the gestural coordination involved in vowel-to-consonant sequences concerning unreleased final stops, which are more susceptible to reduction than their released counterparts. Thus, coarticulatory information on the preceding vowel is important to signal place contrasts of post-vocalic stops. The gestural coordination of vowel-consonant sequences of monosyllabic words in Cantonese represents a testing case for havin…

  • Excerpts from Everything Is a Projection (2020-present)

    Suki Yiu•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Photography•2021

In three-dimensional (3D) computer graphics, photography is treated not as the final product but as data to be extracted, information to be mapped onto and raw material to augment 3D models. Texture maps, normal maps and bump maps, created from photographic data, describe the reflectance properties of an object in a virtual scene. They give instructions to the render engine to calculate the correct pixel value, generating a near imperceptibly nat…

  • One face, millions of faces

    Suki Yiu•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Photography•2021•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 10

Borrowing Timothy Morton's notion of hyperobject, this article explores questions of network and scale in generative adversarial networks (GAN) images. In this context, the term network refers to the omnipresence of algorithmic images today and their significant impact on our lives. Such images are massively distributed in time and space beyond any sensible human-scale. Scale, in this context, denotes the relations between different operational l…

  • Iambic and Trochaic Rhythm in Jieyang (Southern Min)

    Open Access•Suki Yiu, Suki S Y Yiu•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2019

This paper examines the application of the Iambic/Trochaic Law to complex tone languages like Jieyang (Teochew, Southern Min). With bidirectional tone sandhi on top of its six-tone inventory, duration and intensity measurements were obtained and fitted into Linear Mixed Effects Regression models to inspect whether duration and intensity contrasts of the two sandhi types match the predictions based on the Law. Results confirmed an interaction betw…

  • Indonesian Bajau (East Lombok)

Open Access•Diana Archangeli, Jonathan Yip et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the International…•2019•Referencias: 6

Bajau is spoken as the primary language from the Philippines to Borneo to eastern Indonesia, by both nomadic and settled communities. It is also known as Badjaw, Badjo, Bajao, Bajo, Bayo, Gaj, Indonesian Bajaw, Orang Laut, Sama, and Terijene; see Simons & Fennig 2017. Glottolog.org lists ‘Indonesian Bajau’ as a language spoken on the south-eastern coast of Sulawesi, glottocode indo1317 and ISO 639-3 bdl. Clifton (2010) claims the population of Ba…
