Big and Little Traditions in Guatemalan Anthropology [and Comments and Replies]
Anthropological work in Guatemala is seen in terms of two traditions according to whether local or foreign researchers are involved. For exposition purposes and historical reasons, the little tradition is reviewed with reference to Sol Tax's work. Three topics are discussed: (1) definitions and conceptions about the people and their culture, (2) social units, and (3) change. The author's own work is also included in this review.
