Desperately seeking satisfaction
The trope of an older woman desiring a satisfying sexual experience is common enough in film to merit a generic label of its own: Sex and the (Older) Single Girl, to paraphrase Helen Gurley Brown. Commonly incorporated in this genre is not only a sense of regret and the ebbing of time but a determination to experience sexual fulfilment – even (and especially) if one must pay for it. For these ageing (often white) women, locating a space to find s…
The Routledge Handbook of Mormonism and Gender
taylor petrey and amy hoyt'sThe Routledge Handbook of Mormonism and Gender is a veritable gold mine of material for scholars interested in the historical and contemporary consideration of gender and gender identity as it relates to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, here referred to as the Mormons. Putting together a volume such as this requires an adroit balance, since the editors and authors must be aware of larger field questions…
Celebrated Selfhood
Making over body and soul
This chapter provides the makeover's insistence on good choices, individualism, aspirationalism, and personal capacities for competition in a global marketplace, it is also steeped in the teas of neoliberalism. It focuses primarily on what might be considered Christian reading of the makeover, its malleability and porousness make it adaptable to many faith systems, from New Age spirituality to pantheism. Within the market-based logic of neolibera…
Torture Porn in Dystopic Feminism
From its very first scene, The Handmaid’s Tale is harrowing, indeed horrifying, to watch. Literally. If you are a feminist media scholar like me, who must often resort to clever multi-platform options for viewing the content on which I write, The Handmaid Tale’s on-screen abuse is so virulent and frequent that the first season’s ten hours cannot be viewed in the more public multi-tasking spaces of the gym or the coffee shop. And forget about tuni…
Introduction
Having gained a global foothold in popular culture, reality TV offers to explicate, regulate and manipulate the social scripts we live by. This issue makes the claim that a transnational approach to reality TV provides a rich context for interrogating the international variability of gender cultures. As the analyses that are presented in this Special Issue indicate, while gender formations may operate according to globally patriarchal scripts, th…
The Epistemology of the (Televised, Polygamous) Closet
This article examines the reality television show Sister Wives (2010–), which focuses on the Kody Brown family, members of a religious group called the Apostolic United Brethren (AUB), in turn part of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (FLDS). The Browns practice a form of “progressive polygamy” that both they and the show establish as quintessentially egalitarian, American, and normal, though not normative. Sister Wiv…
Project Reality TV
This introduction to the special issue “Project Reality TV” interrogates, while also playing with, some of TV's forms and conventions, particularly those of the “preshow special” and the interview format. Borrowing from this format, it explores key issues around the appeal of reality television and the reasons for approaching it from a scholarly perspective, particularly that of feminist media studies. This version of the studio Q&A format, honed…
Reality Moms, Real Monsters
This article examines the fame-hungry reality celebrity mother as a template for a new form of the female grotesque emerging within the postmillennial mediascape. Using a model of transmediation, the article argues that understanding this figure requires analyzing not only television but also online media and print and digital tabloids and the audience discourses involved with them. It further argues that transmediation incorporates gender and se…
Masculinity, American Modernity, and Body Modification
American Eunuchs, a 2003 documentary made by Italian directors Gian Claudio Guiducci and Franco Sacchi, offers a set of possibilities about men and the male body that may lead a viewer to believe that masculinity can be strengthened in the absence of the dominant signifier that is male genitalia. The documentary features a series of what the film terms “surreal” and “bizarre” portraits of biological men who voluntarily choose to be castrated or t…

Stark raving fat
Britney Spears offers a particular case study that makes visible a larger cultural mandate: a woman’s slender body correlates with both her moral fiber and her mental well-being. Thus, thin-ness is read as a signifier of both impulse control and sanity. These metaphorical ties reinforce the pathology attached to the fat body, indicating that the thin body is seemingly one step closer to a Western ideal of empowered rational individualism, whereas…
The legacies of Oprah Winfrey
After 25 years on the air, Oprah Winfrey's celebrated talk show left television in May 2011. By the time it concluded, The Oprah Winfrey Show had reached more than 40 million viewers a week in the
Reality (celebrity) check
As the scholarly field of celebrity studies has demonstrated, fame performs a valuable cultural work akin to other social formations such as religion or heroism in that it often polices and makes intelligible divisions between the ordinary and the extraordinary, between the normal and the excessive and even between life and death. Celebrity studies theorists have tended to focus on the film industry and the star system in their reflections on the…

Toward a Genderful Pedagogy and the Teaching of Masculinity
This article considers the following questions: How does good teaching build a knowledge of gender identity into its practice? How do we begin the slow process of creating a different ethos regarding masculinity? What are the mechanisms through which a new pedagogy of masculinity can operate? As two scholars teaching masculinity in separate public university spaces—one in a gender studies department at a research I school and the other in element…
