  • First evidence of a Palaeolithic frequentation of the Po plain in Piedmont

Sara Daffara, Carlo Giraudi et al.•PREPRINT•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 55

The Trino hill is an isolated relief located in north-western Italy, close to Trino municipality. The hill was subject of multidisciplinary studies during the 1970s, when, because of quarrying and agricultural activities, five concentrations of lithic artefacts were recognized and referred to a Palaeolithic occupation of the area. During the 1980s and the 1990s, surface collections continued, but the lithic finds have never been subject of specif…

  • The climate-triggered western shift of the confluence between the Dora Baltea and Po rivers (north-western Italy) during the late Holocene

    Open Access•Carlo Giraudi•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2018•Referencias: 2

The study on the migrations of the confluence between the rivers Po and Dora Baltea was based on a detailed observation of aerial photographs, field surveys and sediment stratigraphy. The age of the sediments and morphological features was based on radiocarbon datings, on the presence of archaeological settlements and ancient artefacts and on historical data. The aerial photographs of the GAI 1954 flight of the Italian Air Force were used because…

  • Humans and Water in Desert “Refugium” Areas

    Open Access•Anna Maria Mercuri, Assunta Florenzano et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinaria Archaeologica…•2015•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 6

  • Coarse sediments in Northern Apennine peat bogs and lakes

    Open Access•Carlo Giraudi•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2014•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 15

This research was conducted in the Northern Apennines, in the upper valleys of the Cedra River and Parma River, occupied by glaciers during the last glacial maximum. The stratigraphy, the dating and the interpretation of the environmental significance of alluvial deposits interbedded between lacustrine sediments are reported. The data provide an overview of the periods of enhanced alluvial activity that occurred after the glacial retreat in the A…

  • Constraining the onset of the Holocene “Neoglacial” over the central Italy using tephra layers

Open Access•Giovanni Zanchetta, Carlo Giraudi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

A study of six tephra layers discovered in different deposits between 1600 and 2700 m a.s.l. in the Apennine chain in central Italy allowed precise stratigraphic constraints on environmental and climatic changes between ca. 4.5 and 3.8 cal ka BP. Chemical analyses allowed the correlation of these tephra layers with the eruptions of Agnano Mt Spina (AMST) from Phlegrean Field and Avellino (AVT) from Somma–Vesuvius. Major environmental changes in t…

  • The Holocene record of environmental changes in the ‘Stagno di Maccarese’ marsh (Tiber river delta, central Italy)

    Open Access•Carlo Giraudi•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

The stratigraphic study of the Stagno di Maccarese, carried out on the sediments exposed in about 7 km of trenches excavated in an area of approximately 1.5 km 2 , has shown that in the course of the Holocene many environmental variations have taken place. The complex evolution of the marsh is demonstrated by the variations in water salinity and the presence of erosion surfaces and soils between the sediments. In the early Holocene, the area stud…

  • Middle and late Pleistocene glaciations in the Campo Felice Basin (central Apennines, Italy)

Open Access•Carlo Giraudi, Giulia Bodrato et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

The present paper refers to research conducted in the tectonic-karst depression of Campo Felice in the central Apennines (Italy), in which glacial, alluvial and lacustrine sediments have been preserved. Stratigraphic interpretations of sediments underlying the Campo Felice Plain are based on evidence obtained from nine continuous-core boreholes. The boreholes reach a depth of 120 m and provide evidence of five sedimentation cycles separated by er…

  • The Holocene climatic evolution of Mediterranean Italy

Open Access•Carlo Giraudi, Michel Magny et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011

We present a synthesis of geological, stratigraphic, geomorphological and stable isotope data collected from continental archives to highlight the environmental and climatic differences between the first and second half of the Holocene of central and southern Italy. The beginning of the Holocene is marked by rapid environmental change. In Mediterranean Italy, between c. 9500 cal. BP and c. 6000—5500 cal. BP, average temperatures were probably hig…

  • The sediments of the ‘Stagno di Maccarese’ marsh (Tiber river delta, central Italy)

    Open Access•Carlo Giraudi•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 8

The environmental evolution, inferred from the sedimentary sequence, that has occurred during the last three millennia in a drained coastal marsh in the Tiber delta is presented. The stratigraphy of the sediments has been revealed through excavation of 7 km of trenches in an area of about 1.5 km 2 . The most evident environmental variations are represented by the transformation of freshwater marshes into brackish-water marshes, around the ninth–e…

Open Access•Laura Sadori, Marco Giardini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2010•Citada por: 19

  • Late Holocene glacial and periglacial evolution in the upper Orco Valley, northwestern Italian Alps

    Open Access•Carlo Giraudi•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

The sediments present in some areas of the Orco Valley provide indications on climatic variations that occurred during the last 6000 years on the southern slopes of the Alps. In particular, distribution and ages of peat layers help define periods and extent of glacial fluctuation in the last 2200 years. Sampling of soils involved in periglacial processes provided a basis for development of a chronological framework of late Holocene environmental …

  • Late Holocene evolution of Tiber river delta and geoarchaeology of Claudius and Trajan Harbor, Rome

Open Access•Carlo Giraudi, Cristiana Tata et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2009•Citada por: 17

This study provides new information on the evolution of the Tiber delta during the late Holocene, and describes the record of sedimentation in the Port of Claudius and Trajan. The Tiber flowed into the Tyrrhenian Sea in the area of the Port of Claudius and Trajan between the 8th and 5th centuries B.C. The harbor basins excavated by the Romans during the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. were filled with sediments containing saltwater fauna, then brackis…

  • Lakeside Cemeteries in the Sahara

    Open Access•Paul C Sereno, Elena A A Garcea et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2008

BACKGROUND: Approximately two hundred human burials were discovered on the edge of a paleolake in Niger that provide a uniquely preserved record of human occupation in the Sahara during the Holocene ( approximately 8000 B.C.E. to the present). Called Gobero, this suite of closely spaced sites chronicles the rapid pace of biosocial change in the southern Sahara in response to severe climatic fluctuation. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Two main oc…

  • Middle to Late Holocene glacial variations, periglacial processes and alluvial sedimentation on the higher Apennine massifs (Italy)

    Open Access•Carlo Giraudi•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

The major climatic variations that have affected the summit slopes of the higher Apennine massifs in the last 6000 yr are shown in alternating layers of organic matter-rich soils and alluvial, glacial and periglacial sediments. The burial of the soils, triggered by environmental–climatic variations, took place in several phases. For the last 3000 yr chronological correlations can be drawn between phases of glacial advance, scree and alluvial sedi…

  • Late-Holocene alluvial events in the Central Apennines, Italy

    Open Access•Carlo Giraudi•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 1

A stratigraphic sequence was identified in the Gran Sasso Massif (Central Apennines, Italy), consisting of alluvial sediments and buried soils. The soils, dated by the radiocarbon method, enabled various alluvial phases that have occurred in the last 2500 years to be chronologically framed. These phases were then correlated with the frequency of the Tiber floods at Rome and with the progradation of its delta. The phases of soil burial by alluvial…
