Perceptions of Buprenorphine With Naloxone Treatment and the Fear of Precipitated Withdrawal
Understanding the role of intersectional identity constructs on psychological well-being of Latino men who have sex with men (LMSM) in San Diego, California
Background: Latino men who have sex with men (LMSM) experience substantial mental health inequities, partly due to intersectional stigma related to their Latino, masculine (i.e., conceptualized as a spectrum of gendered expectations, where both endorsement and non-endorsement of traditional masculine norms shape experience), and sexual identities. While prior research has examined identity valence (e.g., internalized stigma, pride) and magnitude …
Stigma’s every day, all day long”
In 2025, gendered inequities in HIV risk and harm remain for women who use drugs (WWUD). WWUD also have low levels of HIV prevention service engagement and likely experience intersectional stigma. The present study sought to explore WWUD's experiences with intersectional stigma and how those experiences shape HIV prevention service use to better inform the development of tailored intervention efforts. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted…
Measurement of Sexual Behavior Stigma in Cisgender Mexican Sexual Minority Men
We used data from the 2018 and 2019 cycles of the American Men’s Internet Survey (AMIS) and the Encuesta de Sexo Entre Hombres (ESEH) (2017) to investigate measurement invariance of a sexual behavior stigma scale among Mexican gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men (SMM). Employing both a two- and three-group multiple group confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA), we established configural invariance of the scale, suggesting a uniform factor p…
Occupational Stress and Substance Use-Related Stigma Among Criminal Attorneys
Problematic substance use is a national crisis in the United States. While criminalization of substance use places the criminal legal system (CLS) on the front lines of this crisis, little is known about how this impacts the CLS workforce. From October 2022 to March 2023, informed by the Health Stigma and Discrimination Framework, we conducted qualitative interviews with practicing criminal attorneys using a semi-structured interview guide focuse…

Safe Injection Self-Efficacy is Associated with HCV and HIV Seropositivity Among People Who Inject Drugs in the San Diego–Tijuana Border Region
Modeling the impact of a supervised consumption site on HIV and HCV transmission among people who inject drugs in three counties in California, USA
Our models suggest that SCS is an important intervention to enable HCV elimination and could help end the HIV epidemic among PWID in California. It could also have additional benefits such facilitating pathways into drug treatment programs and preventing fatal overdose
Implications and Lessons Learned While Using Social Media Advertisements to Promote Longitudinal Social Network Study Participation in Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men (LMSM)
Characterizing the Prevalence and Perpetrators of Documented Fatal Violence Against Black Transgender Women in the United States (2013–2021)
The epidemic of fatal violence against Black transgender women in the United States requires immediate response. We conducted secondary analyses of public databases with 229 documented acts of fatal violence against transgender women; Black transgender women accounted for 78.6%. Significantly more Black transgender women were fatally shot by a gun ( p < .001) and killed younger ( p = .002) than non-Black transgender women. Perpetrators were ident…

Constructing Taxonomies
Injection drug use is a significant mode of HIV transmission. Social networks are potential avenues for behavior change among high-risk populations. Increasing knowledge should include a classification or taxonomy system of networks' attributes, risks, and needs. The current study employed 232 networks comprising 232 indexes, with 464 network members enrolled in Philadelphia. LCA revealed a three-class solution, Low-Risk, Paraphernalia Risk, and …
A cross-sectional study of factors associated with Covid-19 testing among people who inject drugs
We identified several factors independently associated with COVID-19 testing and multiple touchpoints where COVID-19 testing could be scaled up for PWID, such as SUD treatment programs and syringe service programs. Integrated health services are needed to improve access to rapid, free COVID-19 testing in this vulnerable population
Examining Geographical Differences in the HIV Care Continuum Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Mexico
We analyzed data collected by the Encuesta de Sexo Entre Hombres study from 15,233 Mexican men who have sex with men (MSM) between May-July 2017 to examine differences in the HIV care continuum. Data were stratified into 6 geographical regions. Prevalence ratios assessed associations between region and care outcomes. Among participants never testing HIV positive (n = 13,583), 66.1% had ever been tested and 43.0% in the past year. Among HIV-positi…
Binge drinking disparities by gender identity, race, and ethnicity in California secondary schools
Our objective was to estimate disparities in binge drinking among secondary school students in California at the intersection of gender identity, race, and ethnicity, without aggregating racial and ethnic categories. We combined two years of the Statewide middle and high school California Healthy Kids Survey (n=951,995) and regressed past month binge drinking on gender identity (i.e., cisgender, transgender, or not sure of their gender identity),…
Feasibility and Acceptability of a Web-Based Peer Navigation-Psychoeducational HIV Intervention for Women
This study examined feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of a pilot randomized controlled trial (BRIDGES) designed to improve HIV care outcomes among syndemic-affected women living with HIV (WLHA). We enrolled and randomized adult WLHA who were out-of-care or at risk of falling out-of-care and experienced any syndemic condition(s) into BRIDGES ( n = 11) or standard of care ( n = 13). BRIDGES employed peer navigation one-on-one sess…
Methods in HIV-Related Intersectional Stigma Research
Researchers are increasingly recognizing the importance of studying and addressing intersectional stigma within the field of HIV. Yet, researchers have, arguably, struggled to operationalize intersectional stigma. To ensure that future research and methodological innovation is guided by frameworks from which this area of inquiry has arisen, we propose a series of core elements for future HIV-related intersectional stigma research. These core elem…

Overlapping Key Populations and HIV Transmission in Tijuana, Mexico
Tijuana, Mexico, has a concentrated HIV epidemic among overlapping key populations (KPs) including people who inject drugs (PWID), female sex workers (FSW), their male clients, and men who have sex with men (MSM). We developed a dynamic HIV transmission model among these KPs to determine the extent to which their unmet prevention and treatment needs is driving HIV transmission. Over 2020-2029 we estimated the proportion of new infections acquired…

Structural Barriers to Women’s Sustained Engagement in HIV Care in Southern California
The role of gender and power dynamics in injection initiation events within intimate partnerships in the US–Mexico border region
Women's initiation into injection drug use often establishes a pattern of risk following first injection. This study explored sources of gendered power dynamics in injection initiation experiences for people who inject drugs. A qualitative subsample from two prospective community-recruited cohorts of people who inject drugs in San Diego and Tijuana provided data on the contexts surrounding injection initiation processes. Intimate partnerships wer…
Intersectionality of internalized HIV stigma and internalized substance use stigma
We adopted an intersectionality framework and examined whether the relationship between internalized HIV stigma and depressive symptoms is moderated by internalized substance use stigma. A total of 85 people living with HIV with a history of substance use in the Bronx, New York, completed a survey. Results revealed evidence of moderation: Participants who internalized HIV stigma experienced greater depressive symptoms only if they also internaliz…

Minutes for health
Sustained retention in HIV medical care is a key health behavior for the long-term health of people living with HIV (PLWH). Approximately 60% of PLWH in the U.S. are poorly retained in HIV care, yet to date, the few available evidence-based retention-promoting interventions are resource and time intensive to implement. The current study describes the feasibility and acceptability of a theory-based retention-promoting intervention designed to meet…
