Sexual decision making of Ugandan young adults
Fifty-one 18-22-year-old Ugandans took part in asynchronous online discussions about sexual decision-making. To increase generalizability and variability of experience, youth were recruited across the country using social media advertising. Participants were stratified into 8 groups by sex and sexual experience (e.g., women who had not had sex). Participants were asked questions such as, "What role do you think [men/women] play in deciding when a…
Ethnic Minorities’ Perceptions of Covid-19 Vaccines and Challenges in the Pandemic
To inform health communication campaigns for COVID-19 prevention and vaccine promotion among racial and ethnic minorities facing disparities, we conducted formative research by interviewing Hispanic/Latino American (Latino), Black/African American (AA), and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) participants to explore their challenges during the pandemic, the barriers and facilitators to receiving COVID-19 vaccines, acceptability of using chatbot…

Adult and Community Influence on Sexual Experience Among First-, Second-, and Third-Generation Immigrant Youth
Adult and community support may protect against sexual experience among immigrant youth, but it remains unknown whether this support confers protection equally across immigrant generations. Drawing on data from 852 race/ethnically diverse low-income youth recruited from Boys & Girls Clubs, we used mixed effect logistic regression models to examine associations between adult and community support and sexual experience and tested interactions to ex…
Development of the Brief Social Capital for Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health Scale
Social capital plays an important role in sexual and reproductive health among youth, yet few measures to assess this concept have been developed and tested for this population. We developed and examined the factor structure of the Brief Social Capital for Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health Scale. Drawing on the empirical literature, we identified item content to assess an overall construct of social capital in relationship to youth's sexual an…

A Systematic Review of Recent Smartphone, Internet and Web 2.0 Interventions to Address the HIV Continuum of Care
The Use of Internet Chat Rooms to Meet Sexual Partners
In 2008, we conducted online interviews with 65 self-identified adult heterosexual men and women and gay/bisexual men to explore perceptions and experiences with meeting people online. Reasons for meeting people online, desired partner characteristics, and the process of connecting for sex paralleled those observed in real-life; but the Internet allowed people to identify more partners and specific partner characteristics. "Background checks" of …
Iteratively Developing an mHealth HIV Prevention Program for Sexual Minority Adolescent Men
Perceptions of health care services and HIV-related health-seeking behavior among Uganda adolescents
Youth represent almost half of all new HIV infections globally. Although condom use is an effective method of HIV prevention among sexually active youth in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), they face substantial barriers in obtaining condoms in environments where adults hold attitudes condemning premarital sex. More research is needed to better understand the multitude of factors that affect SSA youths' behaviors regarding safe sex practices, including f…
Opportunities for technology-based HIV prevention programming among high school students in Cape Town, South Africa
One in three new cases of HIV in South Africa is among adolescents. Given that adolescents are particularly affected, scalable, and cost-effective prevention programs are urgently needed. This study aims to identify opportunities to integrate technology into youth HIV prevention efforts. In 2012, 1107 8th-11th graders completed a paper-and-pencil survey. Respondents were enrolled in one of three public high schools in Langa, a lower income commun…
Acceptability and feasibility of CyberSenga
Capitalizing on emerging data suggesting that HIV-preventive behaviors can be positively affected by Internet-based programs, we developed and tested CyberSenga, an Internet-based, comprehensive sexuality education program for adolescents in Mbarara, Uganda. Three hundred and sixty-six secondary school students were randomly assigned to either the five-lesson program (+ booster) or a treatment-as-usual control. At three-month follow-up, intervent…

Sexting, Substance Use, and Sexual Risk Behavior in Young Adults
Prevalence rates of sexual coercion victimization and perpetration among Uganda adolescents
Coercion is consistently reported as a risk factor for HIV in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Because of the gendered nature of previous research, however, little is known about male victims or female perpetrators. To address this gap, we report survey data from 354 sexually experienced secondary school students in Mbarara, Uganda. Findings suggest that females are more likely to report involvement in coercive sex compared to males (66% vs. 56%, respec…
Examining the Applicability of the IMB Model in Predicting Condom Use Among Sexually Active Secondary School Students in Mbarara, Uganda
Recruitment and retention of youth for research using social media
Youth, particularly youth of color, continue to face disparities with regard to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. Yet, comprehensive education about sex and sexual risk for STIs is not universal for youth in the United States. While Internet research on HIV prevention has demonstrated that the medium can be as effective as face-to-face education and prevention approaches, Internet-based research has faced challenges in recrui…
Text messaging for HIV prevention with young Black men
This article describes the formative research and campaign development for a pilot study to test the feasibility of using cell phone text messaging to promote HIV prevention for young African-American men. We conducted six focus groups with Black men aged 16-20 (N=43) in order to obtain feedback on the campaign content and how best to convey sexual health information via text message using cell phones. We present three main findings: (1) the part…
Adolescents’ perceptions of sexual coercion in Uganda
In Uganda, HIV prevalence remains high with young people at higher risk of infection than adults. Much is known about the sexual risk factors for HIV transmission among youths, including sexual encounters that are coerced. On the other hand, relatively little is known about the barriers to preventing sexual coercion and what strategies may overcome those barriers with adolescents. We conducted three focus group discussions with adolescents in an …

Relationships of Stigma and Shame to Gonorrhea and HIV Screening
Objectives. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationships between stigma and shame associated with seeking treatment for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and undergoing testing for gonorrhea and HIV. Methods. Participants were 847 males and 1126 females (mean age: 24.9 years) in 7 cities. Two scales assessed STD-related stigma and STD-related shame. Results. Rates of stigma and shame were higher among participants without a gonorr…
Men who Have Sex with Men and Also Inject Drugs-Profiles of Risk Related to the Synergy of Sex and Drug Injection Behaviors
These data show that MSM-IDU are engaging in multiple risk behaviors that may have a synergistic effect on HIV transmission, and that their injection drug of choice contributes to their risk. That there do not appear to be consistent differences in preventive behaviors between men with or without HIV infection suggests a greatly increased risk for HIV transmission in this group of men and their partners. Because MSM-IDU do not identify strongly w…

Contraception and Culture
The use of herbs (yuyos) as contraception is common practice in Paraguay. This report analyzes data from the 1995-1996 Paraguayan Reproductive Health Survey. The analysis reveals that women are more familiar with yuyos (88%) than any other method of family planning. Modeling the determinants of ever having relied on yuyos as contraception demonstrates that older women (OR = 1.043) and women with more children (OR = 2.283) are significantly more l…
Soliciting Sex on the Internet

PURPOSE: In this article, reasons for this gap, focusing on study design characteristics as a central contributing barrier, are discussed. METHODS: Four reviews of recent controlled studies in work sites, health care, school, and community settings are briefly discussed and summarized. Their implications for f…
Recruitment and retention of an online sample for an HIV prevention intervention targeting men who have sex with men
There is an increasing interest in developing interventions for HIV and STD prevention that can be delivered on the Internet. However, we know little about what it takes to identify, recruit and retain participants in interventions so that we can test their efficacy and effectiveness. Objectives for this investigation were to evaluate rates of recruitment and retention in an Internet-based randomized controlled trial (RCT) to increase sexually tr…
The process of seeking sex partners online and implications for STD/HIV prevention
Research has shown that online sex-seeking among men who have sex with men (MSM) is related to elevated risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV infection; however, the process of seeking sex online is not well understood. It is important to understand the process of seeking sex partners in order to determine the best method for reaching MSM at high risk for infection. We report on baseline data from the Smart Sex Quest, an In…
