  • The Future of Childhood Studies

Open Access•Christina Müller, Heinz Sünker et al.•BOOK•Future of Childhood Studies•2020

Since the 1990s, the emerging field of childhood studies has been catalyst for empirical research, for policy analysis, and for the development of professional practice. Which concepts and theories are the most helpful in analyzing phenomena relevant to children’s lives? The book reflects on this debate and discusses current challenges of major disciplines within the social studies of childhood.

  • ‘It came up to here’: Learning from children’s flood narratives

Marion Walker, Rebecca Whittle et al.•CHAPTER•Children and Young People As…•2020

The growing body of literature that seeks to understand the social impacts of flooding has failed to recognise the value of children's knowledge.Working with a group of floodaffected children in Hull using a storyboard methodology this paper argues that the children have specific flood experiences that need to be understood in their own right. In this paper we consider the ways in which the disruption caused by the flood revealed and produced new …

  • The relevance of ‘competence’ for enhancing or limiting children’s participation: Unpicking conceptual confusion

    Open Access•Jo Moran-Ellis, E Kay M Tisdall•ARTICLE•Global Studies of Childhood•2019•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 16

Recent debates about children’s participation rights, formulated in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, primarily focus on ‘effectiveness’ of implementation. However, children’s participation remains problematic, its limited impact on adult power in decision-making or on the nature of decisions made persists, and implicated in both are reservations about children’s competence as participants. In respect of this, we analysed conceptualis…

  • Nuevos estudios de infancia, política de infancia y derechos de los niños y niñas

    Open Access•Heinz Sünker, Jo Moran-Ellis•ARTICLE•Sociedad e Infancias•2018

  • Childhood studies, children's politics and participation: Perspectives for Processes of Democratisation

    Jo Moran-Ellis, Heinz Sünker•ARTICLE•International Review of Sociology•2018•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 54

From the early Frankfurt School through to the work of Manuel Castells, there has been a rich body of work on the cleavage between technological and social developments of the twentieth century in respect of the consequences for the constitution of subjectivity. However, little attention is paid to the role of children during their childhoods in attempts to bridge this gap beyond discussions about the democratic actors children will become when t…

  • It came up to here’: Learning from children's flood narratives

    Marion Walker, Richard Whittle et al.•ARTICLE•Children s Geographies•2012•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 6

The growing body of literature that seeks to understand the social impacts of flooding has failed to recognise the value of children's knowledge. Working with a group of flood-affected children in Hull using a storyboard methodology, this paper argues that the children have specific flood experiences that need to be understood in their own right. In this paper, we consider the ways in which the disruption caused by the flood revealed and produced…

  • Reflections on the Sociology of Childhood in the UK

    Open Access•Jo Moran-Ellis•ARTICLE•Current Sociology•2010•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 24

The emergence and development of the sociology of childhood in the UK is strongly connected to the establishment of this area of study in the Nordic countries. However any account of this must also look at the wider context of political and cultural constructions of childhood, children and young people, and intergenerational relationships in the UK. In the early stages of childhood studies there was a synchrony between the orientation of the new …

  • Towards an understanding of British public attitudes concerning human cloning

    Open Access•Robert Shepherd, Richard Shepherd et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2007•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 23

  • The Sleeping Lives of Children and Teenagers: Night-Worlds and Arenas of Action

    Open Access•Jo Moran-Ellis, Sue Venn et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2007•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 8

Most research into sleep, even that which includes a sociological dimension, tends to focus on sleep outcomes, in effect following an agenda set by the natural sciences and psychology. The work reported in this paper engages with the material and social dimensions of sleep from within social constructionist and interactionist frameworks, seeking to explore and theorise the meaning and experience of sleep from the perspective of the sleeper. In do…

  • Triangulation and integration: Processes, Claims and Implications

    Open Access•Jo Moran-Ellis, V D Alexander et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research•2006•Citada por: 58•Referencias: 28

Researchers who advocate the use of multiple methods often write interchangeably about 'integrating', 'combining' and 'mixing' methods, sometimes eliding these descriptors with 'triangulation', which itself encompasses several meanings. In this article we argue that such an elision is problematic since it obscures the difference between (a) the processes by which methods (or data) are brought into relationship with each other (combined, integrate…

  • Children, Technology, and Culture: The Impacts of Technologies in Children's Everyday Lives

  • Making Connections: Children, Technology, and the National Grid for Learning

    Open Access•Jo Moran-Ellis, Geoff Cooper•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2000•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

Late in 1997 the UK Government launched 'Connecting the Learning Society' (CtLS) as the first concrete step in instituting a 'National Grid for Learning' which will connect schools (and other sites and institutions) to an 'information superhighway'. This paper presents a textual analysis of CtLS which examines the ways in which technology and the child are presented. We find that CtLS relies on conventional constructions of children as learners a…

  • Children as informal interpreters in GP consultations: Pragmatics and Ideology

    Open Access•Suzanne Cohen, Jo Moran-Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•1999•Citada por: 16

This paper explores the views of General Practitioners (GPs) about the appropriateness of children undertaking a task of interpretation between the GP and an adult patient in primary heath care consultations. We argue that the operational constraints that GPs face because of the limited availability of professional interpreters or bi-lingual Health Advocates create situations where children are accepted in this role by GPs, subject to specific li…

Jo Moran-Ellis, Nigel Fielding•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•1996

  • Party Identification and Attitudes Towards Homosexuals in Great Britain

Bernadette C Hayes, Jo Moran-Ellis•ARTICLE•International Journal of Public…•1995•Citada por: 1

Legislative activity and controversy concerning the issue of homosexual rights and practices has intensified in Britain over the last decade. Despite this increase in intensity, however, the question of mass public opinion in relation to homosexual rights and practices has received little empirical investigation. In an effort to remedy this situation, this paper focuses on the influence of party identification in determining public attitudes towa…
