Contradictory regimes of practice
Using concepts from Kelly and Foucault, analysis of interviews in the mid-1990s with staff in an English open prison explores how contrasting discourses are reconciled. Two superficially antagonistic discursive formations within prison practice are described: a discourse of discipline/control and an ethic of reform and reclaiming “spoiled” criminals for good and productive life. The story of the ‘Arab Spring’ as a revolt of young people against autocracy does not stand up to survey analysis at country level. This book analyses its nature and devises a consistent way of measuring the concept world-wide on the basis of a coherent theory of agency within social structure. This paper looks at recovery from the normative collapse which followed the fall of the Soviet Union; two large-scale surveys allow comparison of levels of trust in 2001 and 2010/2011. The collapse of the Soviet Union was not just an economic event; it destroyed the normative framework and drove people back to reliance on things they could see and people they knew. Overcoming poverty and inequality
Despite the 1994 genocide there has been annual growth in Rwanda every year since 2000. Poverty has decreased; while the MDG target of 23.8% is unlikely to be met by 2015, the future looks hopeful. The goal of reducing hunger is measured by underweight children – already down to target – and extreme poverty – likely to hit the target. The paper looks at changing concepts of citizenship among young people in Moldova in a context of social and system disintegration. Due to the protracted economic and political crisis there, young people were disengaged from political, economic and social citizenship but are socially integrated at the level of family and friendship networks, which gives them a sense of belonging in Moldovan society. Trust, confidence and social environment in post-communist societies
This paper looks at trust and confidence in people and institutions in eight of the countries that have undergone transformation since the breakup of the Soviet Union. While the questions are not identical to those asked in previous research in post-Soviet societies, our findings are comparable—greatest trust in relatives and friends, less in people in general and least in politicians and institutions of social control. This article argues that in both policy and economic debates the specifically local experiences of older people living in deprived neighbourhoods have been ignored. It describes research undertaken in an area of material deprivation and low access to ‘social capital’, on the margins of Middlesbrough both geographically and socially. A health and lifestyle survey of older people in the area was supplemented by Community Futures Workshops at which …

This paper uses British Household Panel Study data to examine the frequency of women's use of four preventive/screening health services: breast cancer screening, cervical cytology, opticians and dentists. Although the take-up rate for all four services is high, there is a relationship between material deprivation, age, social class and service use.
