  • Adult belief change

    Open Access•K Manevska, Kaat Smets•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•2025•Referencias: 17

Belief change in later life is understudied as it goes against the well‐established idea that political attitudes are formed early on in life and remain mostly stable thereafter. Recently, some studies have emerged that address adult belief change. However, these studies are mostly descriptive and offer relatively little insight into how, for whom, and under which conditions adult belief change takes place. This special issue on adult belief chan…

  • Watched but Not Seen

Open Access•G Jansen, Hadassa Noorda et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 58

Electronic employee monitoring has strongly increased over the last decades. This article investigates to what extent electronic and non-electronic monitoring practices affect feelings of (mis)recognition both at the workplace and more widely in society. To better comprehend the effects of electronic monitoring, we use Noorda's conception of 'imprisonment'. Building on the argument that electronic monitoring resembles a situation of imprisonment,…

  • The workplace as a source of ethnic tolerance? Studying interethnic contact and interethnic resources at work in the Netherlands

Open Access•K Manevska, Roderick Sluiter et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•Referencias: 52

This study combines insights from contact theory and social capital literature to study how ethnic diversity at work is associated to ethnic tolerance. It is argued that workplace ethnic diversity is related to ethnic tolerance in two ways: through interethnic contact and through interethnic social resources. The interrelation between these two mechanisms is also considered. The study relies on unique workplace survey data from the Netherlands (N…

  • Be Careful How You Treat Your Coworkers

Open Access•Antonia Stanojevic, Agnes Akkerman et al.•ARTICLE•Basic and Applied Social Psychology•2022

We study the reciprocal relationship between interethnic interactions among coworkers and native (Dutch) employees’ attitudes regarding immigrant entitlements. Building on contact theory, we hypothesize that voice support by ethnic outgroup coworkers leads to more favorable, while voice suppression leads to less favorable attitudes regarding immigrant entitlements. Furthermore, we examine potential reciprocal effects. The hypotheses are tested us…

  • Atypical work, worker voice and supervisor responses

    Open Access•Roderick Sluiter, K Manevska et al.•ARTICLE•Socio-Economic Review•2020•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 12

We study atypical workers’ experiences with voice of in the Netherlands. We take a relational approach to worker voice and hypothesize that atypical workers are particularly vulnerable to refrain from voice and to experience suppression. We test our hypotheses using unique data on workers’ actual experiences with voicing discontent and supervisors’ responses (N = 4708; collected in 2017 and 2018). We find that temporary and freelance work, job in…

  • Good Workers and Crooked Bosses

    Open Access•Antonia Stanojevic, Agnes Akkerman et al.•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•2020•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 60

This study is the first to explore the effect of political socialization in the workplace on populist attitudes. We investigate the effect of workplace voice suppression on employees' populist attitudes and voting. We expect employees who were suppressed by supervisors to hold more populist attitudes and to be more likely to vote for a populist party than employees who were not. We argue that some employees experience voice suppression by supervi…

  • Immigration and Perceived Ethnic Threat

    K Manevska, P Achterberg•ARTICLE•European Sociological Review•2013•Citada por: 41•Referencias: 29

This article aims to study to what extent the share of immigrants in a country influences individuals’ perceptions of ethnic threat and how this can be explained by theories of economic and cultural threat. Following an economic logic, people with a weak socio-economic position should have a greater perception of ethnic threat. This would be more so if the share of low-educated immigrants in a country was relatively high. Following a cultural log…

  • Some are more equal than others’

Open Access•Jeroen Van Der Waal, P Achterberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of European Social Policy•2010•Citada por: 105•Referencias: 38

Various studies have demonstrated that while the lower educated support economic redistribution more than the higher educated do, they nonetheless dislike welfare support for immigrants more strongly. This paper aims to explain this remarkably particularistic application of the principle of economic egalitarianism (‘welfare chauvinism’) by testing three theories by means of survey data representative of the Dutch population ( N = 1972). The first…
