The Lamellar Flake Manufacturing Site on Anangula Island in the Aleutians
Anangula is an island 1.6 miles long and .5 mile wide, lying on the north side of Nikolski Bay about 4.5 miles northwest of Nikolski village, Umnak Island, in the eastern Aleutians. The designation of this island on United States Coast and Geodetic Survey charts is Ananiuliak, a transliteration of the Russianized form 'Ananyulyakh' of the original Aleut name 'Anangulagh' (from which we have subtracted the ending -gh to give 'Anangula'). Completion of the analysis of the artifacts from Chaluka, the old village site at Nikolski, Umnak Island, has brought to light a number of new observations on the Aleutian core and blade industry, orginally described in American Antiquity , Vol. 17, No. 1, pp. 52-54. Account of work conducted during preceding three summers by parties of anthropologists, archeologists and medical workers, at Nikolski village on Umnak Island, at Atka on Atka Island and at St. Paul Island in the Pribilofs. The results of this work are correlated with those of earlier investigators in a summary account of the physical anthropology, archeology, ethnology and linguistics of Aleuts.
