Socioeconomic disadvantage explains neighborhood racial inequality in opioid-related mortality
Evaluating the Feasibility of the Participant‐Led Video Intervention to Train Support Workers From the Perspective of Disability Sector Professionals
BACKGROUND: Tailored disability support is fundamental to the lives of adults with disability and complex needs. However, support quality is inconsistent. An intervention was co-designed to help people with disability direct their supports: participant-led videos (PLVs). Following a successful pilot study, this study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of the use of PLVs by sector professionals working with people with disability in the community. …
Understanding the Housing and Support Experience of People With Complex Disability in Australia
In 2019, the Australian government established the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (‘Disability Royal Commission’, DRC ) to investigate widespread mistreatment of people with disability. Nearly 10,000 people with disability, their families and supporters engaged with the DRC . The Commission published 1586 de‐identified narratives online, of which 485 focused on the theme of housing. The D…
Trends in the Female Longevity Advantage of Nineteenth-Century Birth Cohorts
This article uses online genealogy data from the United States over the nineteenth century to estimate period and cohort-based sex differences in longevity. Following previous work, we find a longevity reversal in the mid-nineteenth century that expanded rapidly for at least a half-century. For measures of conditional survival past childbearing age, females enjoyed a longevity advantage for the whole century. Unlike most mortality databases of th…
Variation in Adult Cognition Across Domains and Life Course Place Effects in the UK
This study explores the role that place of birth and place of residence have in variation in cognition in adulthood in the UK. We take advantage of both the large sample size and number of cognitive domains in the UK Biobank to estimate the effect of place of birth and place of residence on adulthood cognition using multilevel modeling. We find, consistent with studies in the US, that place effects at both time points contribute modest variation …
Educational attainment, family background and the emergence of pain gradients in adulthood
Conceptualizing rurality
Background: of disproportionately higher mortality rates in these areas. But what does the concept of "rural" capture and conjure? How we explain these geographic differences has spanned modes of place measurement and definitions. We employ three county-level rural-urban definitions to (1) analyze how spatially specific and robust rural disparities in mortality are and (2) identify whether mortality outcomes are dependent on different definitions…
The healthcare needs and general practice utilization of people with acquired neurological disability and complex needs
Development and preliminary evaluation of a novel participant‐led video intervention to train disability support workers
This paper describes the development and preliminary evaluation of a novel participant-led video (PLV) intervention to support people with disability (PWD) and cognitive and communication impairments to communicate their needs and preferences to their disability support workers. The PLV intervention was designed following a scoping literature review and workshop with PWD and close others. Subsequently, it was piloted with five primary participant…
Association and pathways of birth in the stroke belt on old age dementia and stroke Mortality
This paper uses data from the Diet and Health Study (DHS) to examine associations between being born in a "stroke belt" state and old age stroke and mortality outcomes. Adding to prior work that used administrative data, our paper explores educational and health mechanisms that are both stratified by geography and by mortality outcomes. Using logistic regression, we first replicate earlier findings of elevation in risk of dementia mortality (OR 1…
State of birth and cardiovascular disease mortality
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading contributor to mortality in the United States. Previous studies have linked early life individual and family factors, along with various contemporaneous place-based exposures to differential individual CVD mortality risk. However, the impacts of early life place exposures and how they compare to the effects of an individual's current place of residence on CVD mortality risk is not well understood. Using…
The effects of education on cognition in older age
General Considerations for Conducting Online Qualitative Research and Practice Implications for Interviewing People with Acquired Brain Injury
Qualitative methodology is key to understanding the lived experience of people with acquired brain injury (ABI). However, as demonstrated during the global pandemic (COVID-19), face-to-face interviewing is not always viable. This lack of availability has been particularly relevant for people with disability who are at increased risk of contracting the virus and experiencing poorer outcomes. Fortunately, advancing technologies provide increasing o…
