  • Bring your animals

    Open Access•Sílvia Valenzuela-Lama, Silvia Valenzuela-Lamas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026•Referencias: 41

A new strontium (87Sr/86Sr) isoscape of the Iberian Peninsula is provided with an open-access R script. • Carbon and oxygen isotopes show horses received fodder, while caprines relied on local grazing resources. • Multi-isotopic analysis offers new insights into Tartessian livestock management and animal husbandry (5th c. BCE). • Findings illuminate the scale and cultural significance of mass animal sacrifice in Iron Age Iberia. The excavations a…

  • The oldest mule in the western Mediterranean. The case of the Early Iron Age in Hort d’en Grimau (Penedès, Barcelona, Spain)

Open Access•Albizuri, Jordi Nadal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025

Genetic and radiocarbon analyses confirm the Hort d'en Grimau mule as the oldest hybrid in the western Mediterranean and continental Europe. • Dated between the mid-8th and mid-6th century BCE. • The mule skeleton was found in a silo alongside the skeletal remains of a woman. This indicates a close relationship between equines and humans. • Pathological bone alterations and isotopic results suggest that the animal may have been used for riding an…

  • First evidence of hippopotamus ivory exchange networks in north-eastern Iberian Peninsula

Open Access•Jose Miguel Morillo Leon, Àfrica Pitarch Martí et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2025•Referencias: 3

This study examines a Late Neolithic-Chalcolithic ivory object (Véraza facies) found at the Bòbila Madurell settlement (Sant Quirze del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain). The main objective was to date the object and determine the provenance of the raw material. The radiocarbon analysis places it in the second quarter of the 3rd millennium BC. FTIR analysis identified it as hippopotamus ivory, marking the first and currently the oldest discovery in north…

  • Carefully sourced, carefully managed

    Open Access•Sílvia Valenzuela-Lama, M Díaz‐zorita Bonilla et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•Referencias: 25

Equids played an important role in the development of communication in past societies, and were part of the exchanges between populations. The multi-isotopic study (strontium, carbon and oxygen isotopes) conducted on equid teeth from Bronze and Early Iron Age Can Roqueta suggests that animals originate from diverse locations and their diet was carefully managed. The enriched oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios in equid teeth compared with other tax…

  • The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes

Open Access•Pablo Librado, Naveed Khan et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2021

Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare 1 . However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling 2–4 at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc 3 . Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia 5 and Anatolia 6 , have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic,…

Éste es el caso de la necrópolis de la Bòbila Madurell (4210-3670 cal BC), la más extensa del Neolítico Medio peninsular en superficie y en número de tumbas. El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar la configuraci…

Can Roqueta has provided a large number of equid and dog assemblages from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age. An analysis of the stable isotopes δ 13 C and δ 15 N in 42 bone samples has made it possible to reconstruct the diet of domestic equids. The results and carpological remains show that the territory was managed for agricultural and pasture use. They indicate the cultivation of two types of highly nutritious and digestible millet, us…

The study of grave goods, including animal deposits, offers a deeper understanding of social issues. This paper presents the results of the analysis of human and animal bone samples from the Iberian necropolis of El Poblado, Murcia. The examination focusses on 18 deposits of ovicaprids radii and ulnae, mostly of the left side, that were derived from 14 cremation tombs of the 74 studied. By considering the human and animal remains together, it is …
