  • The Relationship between HIV Disclosure and Adjustment

    Open Access•David Vance, David E Vance•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2006

In many cases, sharing the diagnosis of HIV can help people to adjust to their diagnosis. However, several factors may impede this process. A secondary data analysis of 50 HIV-positive adults found that African Americans delayed sharing their diagnosis with others longer than Euro-Americans. In addition, those who perceived more stigma against HIV took longer to tell someone and took longer to adjust to their diagnosis. Implications for practice …

    Open Access•David Vance, David E Vance•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2006

  • Strengths and Barriers in Conducting Research among Older Adults with HIV

    Open Access•David Vance, David E Vance•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2003

Interviews and field notes from a qualitative study of older adults with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) were analyzed to identify barriers and strengths to studying this population. • Barriers and Aids in Conducting Research with Older Homeless Individuals

    Open Access•David Vance, David E Vance•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1995

Field notes of a qualitative pilot study of older homeless people in Cincinnati identified several barriers and aids to the study of homeless elders. Identified research barriers were researcher's lack of contextual wisdom (street smarts), locating elders, substance abuse, attrition, victimization, credibility of informants, and xenophobia. Identified research aids were friendliness of certain elders, openness of the researcher, attractive incent…

  • Barriers to Use of Services by Older Homeless People

    Open Access•David Vance, David E Vance•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1994

Analysis of responses during participant observation and face-to-face interviews of four homeless elders and six service providers indicated that the four elders comprehended and used the service environment; however, hopelessness (learned helplessness) appears to be the largest personal obstacle to use of such resources by elderly homeless persons to change their situation
