  • Regional energy security

Open Access•Marie-Annette Brown, Marilyn Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2026

Regions of the United States (U.S.) are challenged by an array of energy security risks. Complementary constructs of path dependence and adoption readiness, combined with rich data analytics are deployed to investigate four energy conundrums emerging from a participatory planning initiative in the U.S. Southeast (SE). The theory of path dependence explains (1) how low electricity rates and high reserve margins have made the SE an attractive targe…

  • Frontiers of weatherization

    Open Access•Ryan Anthony, Brian Y An et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2025•Referencias: 6

Low-income weatherization programs provide home energy efficiency upgrades to reduce utility costs, improve indoor comfort, and address the health and safety needs of income-constrained households. This review examines seventeen retrospective, outcome-focused evaluations of weatherization programs conducted over the past four decades to assess how program evaluation methods have evolved, where critical gaps remain, and how future studies can impr…

  • High energy burden and low-income energy affordability

Open Access•Marie-Annette Brown, Anmol Soni et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in Energy•2020

In an era of U.S. energy abundance, the persistently high energy bills paid by low-income households is troubling. After decades of weatherization and bill-payment programs, low-income households still spend a higher percent of their income on electricity and gas bills than any other income group. Their energy burden is not declining, and it remains persistently high in particular geographies such as the South, rural America, and minority communi…

    Open Access•Marie-Annette Brown, Marilyn A Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2020

Using bibliometric methods, we examine the persistently high energy bills borne by low-income households in the U.S. This is a mystifying problem in today's age of abundant and low-priced electricity and fossil fuels. After decades of energy-efficiency programs and targeted policies, the average low-income household still spends a disproportionately large percentage of its income on energy bills. Issues of equity, race and justice are increasingl…

  • Relaxing Energy Policies Coupled with Climate Change Will Significantly Undermine Efforts to Attain US Ozone Standards

Open Access•Huizhong Shen, Yilin Chen et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2019

The United States (US) federal administration is relaxing energy policies (EPs), with yet uncharacterized effects on ambient air quality. The complex effects of EPs coupled with uncertainties associated with future climate have hindered past quantification. Here, we integrate model simulations to show that compared with a scenario of continued EPs and stationary climate, relaxation of EPs coupled with intense warming will increase the number of U…

Geographical analysis of the costs and benefits of alternative energy policies has also grown in scope and sophistication.

  • Energy benchmarking of commercial buildings

    Open Access•Matt Cox, Marie-Annette Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

US cities are beginning to experiment with a regulatory approach to address information failures in the real estate market by mandating the energy benchmarking of commercial buildings. Understanding how a commercial building uses energy has many benefits; for example, it helps building owners and tenants identify poor-performing buildings and subsystems and it enables high-performing buildings to achieve greater occupancy rates, rents, and proper…

  • Modelling the Spatial Distribution of Suburban Crime

    Marie-Annette Brown, Marilyn A Brown•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•1982•Citada por: 13

This paper examines the spatial distribution of crime among Chicago's suburbs by completing a spatial autocorrelation and regression analysis of crime occurrence rates. The results suggest that there is little interjurisdictional spillover of violent crime among the suburbs of Chicago. Rather, the clustered spatial pattern of crime and its decay with distance to the city of Chicago reflects the nonrandom spatial distribution of offender rates. Th…

    Marie-Annette Brown, B K Sovacool•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•2007•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 1

How well are industrialised nations doing in terms of energy policy? Without a standardised set of metrics to evaluate national energy systems, it is difficult to determine the extent to which energy resources, technologies and infrastructure are truly keeping up with emerging challenges related to climate change, the environment, population growth and economic wellbeing. In response, we propose the creation of an energy sustainability index (ESI…

    Marie-Annette Brown, Raymond K Oldakowski•ARTICLE•Urban Geography•1986•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 9

This paper examines the spatial dynamics of suburban crime. Four hypotheses are developed postulating a decreasing central city-suburb disparity in crime rates, persistence in the relative crime rates of individual suburbs, a growing heterogeneity in the levels of crime faced by individual suburbs, and an increasing regionalization of suburban crime. The hypotheses are tested through a case study of the Chicago metropolitan area. Property and vio…

  • Stimulating Energy Conservation by Sharing the Savings

    Open Access•Marie-Annette Brown, M A Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1988•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

In this paper a novel shared-savings approach to residential energy conservation is evaluated. By the use of data on preretrofit and postretrofit energy consumption, a normalization procedure to control for weather, and control groups, it is concluded that the shared-savings program (RECAP) has reduced annual electricity consumption by 1556 kWh per household, or 6.6% of preretrofit consumption. Empirical analysis of survey data from Decatur, Illinois provides support for the theory and insight into barriers to energy conservation

  • A Typology of Suburbs and Its Public Policy Implications

    Open Access•Marie-Annette Brown•ARTICLE•Urban Geography•1981•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

It illustrates that suburbs vary greatly in their needs for community development and that their dimensions of hardship combine such that suburbs cannot be placed along a continuum on which every dimension of need increases. Suburbs having similar overall levels of need may have quite dissimilar types of need. In order to understand the clustering of various suburban p…
