Connecting With Hyperlocal News Website: Cause or Effect of Civic Participation
This is one of the first systematic explorations into the relationship between residents' connection to a hyperlocal news website and civic participation. Integrating an ecological framework of civic participation and an audience-centered approach, the present study investigates whether residents' connection to a hyperlocal news website serves as the cause or effect of community participation. Using survey data with probability sampling of ethnic…
Bridging mechanisms in multiethnic communities: Place-based communication, neighborhood belonging, and intergroup relations
Using communication infrastructure theory (CIT), this study examines how place-based communication, including neighborhood interpersonal discussion, geo-ethnic media, and local organizations, may have the potential to promote multiethnic intergroup relations through forging a sense of neighborhood belonging. Based on survey data consisting of 405 diverse community members, this study employs structural equation modeling to test the relationships …
Mobile Design as Neighborhood Acupuncture: Activating the Storytelling Networks of South Los Angeles
A delicate touch is required to empower neighborhoods using civic media. Funding is persistently scarce. Especially in marginalized neighborhoods, blunt designs can be counterproductive and even entrench complex problems. New metaphors may be needed to guide design and empower local neighborhoods. Urban acupuncture is used as the basis for this study, emphasizing a light-touch strategy that has shown success in Brazil with urban transit, and more…

Localizing the Global: Exploring the Transnational Ties That Bind in New Immigrant Communities
This study seeks to examine the ways in which transnational life is lived at different “local” levels. In particular, we ask: What are some of the important aspects of immigrants' life that are enacted across borders? To what extent are ethnic media that serve the immigrant population connected to home countries in content and operation? To what extent does transnational news have local and global implications? Multiple methods are employed in th…
Watts, the 1965 Los Angeles Riots, and the Communicative Construction of the Fear Epicenter of Los Angeles A previous version of this paper was presented at the American Sociological Annual Conference…
215 mental maps collected in 1998 indicate that Watts is Los Angeles' epicenter of fear. Spatial cluster analysis provides evidence that this fear is most closely associated with the 1965 "Watts" riots. The role played by television in constructing spatial fear is proposed as a possible explanation for the persistence of this collective memory. Analysis of phone survey data and of a set of mental maps indicates that the greatest fear of Watts is …
The Internet in the Communication Infrastructure of Urban Residential Communities: Macro- or Mesolinkage
The article refines the view that the Internet is increasingly incorporated in everyday life, concluding that the new medium has been partially integrated in the “communication infrastructure” of English-speaking Los Angeles neighborhoods. Here, Internet connectedness is associated with civic participation and indirectly contributes to “belonging” to a residential community. However, in predominantly Asian and Latino areas, the Internet is diseng…
