Re-esclarecimento / Re-Enlightenment

Det pekes på to farer for dagens so…
The Interface Between Social Research and Policy Making
Problems of communication often arise when social research is to be used as premises for policy making. In this paper it is argued that the two activities are entirely different, yet that there is a logical parallelism between theory construction and policy making which can be identified in four steps. Where scientists make observations, politicians raise issues. Where scientists propose explanations, politicians propose remedies. Where scientist…

We Are Smarter than We Think
Rational choice theory is not a conceptual system to be verified but a family of "sometimes-true theories" that are applicable in certain situations. Even the most heroic family members (i.e., those based on omniscient maximizers) may yield astounding insights, as may those theories based on less potent members (e.g., models based on result-controlled purposive behavior). These assertions are illustrated by Weber's analysis of the transition to c…
Norwegians' Attitudes Toward New Immigrants
During the 1980s Norway, together with Denmark and Sweden, experienced an influx of immigrants, refugees and asylum-seekers from the poorer nations of Asia. Africa and Latin America. The encounter forced Norwegians to confront their established values and attitudes. One of the most homogeneous and uniform countries in the world underwent a unique experiment: new groups and colors changed the traditional picture- and perhaps as a result the nation…
The Dilemmas of Social Democracies
During the last couple of decades the political landscape in Norway and Sweden has changed considerably and tensions between the social democratic parties and the trade unions have emerged In this article potential sources for these developments are discussed Particular attention is given to the role of the labor market. It is argued that increasing segmentation of the labor market has produced a more diverse organizational and institutional stru…
The Iron Law of Inequality
Two general hypotheses about education and social stratification in socialist and non-socialist societies have been proposed in the literature. The first states that the impact of family background on educational attainment will be weaker in socialist state-systems, the second that the association between education and social position will be stronger than in Western countries. On the basis of recent comparative studies it is hypothesized, howeve…

The Logic of The Protestant Ethic
We appreciate Max Weber's classic The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (1930) as a distinguished work both because of the particular logical elements used and the way that Weber strings them in the dramatic construction of the work. Weber first established the phenomenon of religious beliefs and capitalist behaviors by multivariate method, eliminating the possible spurious relations. Second, Weber found the sources of capitalism in t…

Structural Change in Social Processes
Models of structural change should be able to explain constancy as well as change, must combine micro- and macrolevel analysis, and must encompass endogenous sources of change. It is necessary to distinguish among three levels of structure of a system: output structure, parameter structure, and process structure. With these concepts four basic types of change processes can be indentified: simple reproduction, extended reproduction, transition, an…

The Process of Entry into First Marriage
A mathematical model is developed for the process of entry into first marriage. The members of a cohort are seen as subject to two types of forces. One is the increase in social pressure to get married as the percentage of the cohort already married increases. The other is the declining marriageability of members of the cohort as they grow older. With some additional assumptions, this gives rise to a non-homogenous diffusion model. The model is i…
Second Order Measures of Association - a Markovian Approach
A technique previously developed for interpreting measures of association for fourfold tables based on markovian assumptions is here extended to derive measures of second order association. Transition rates between the states repre sented by 'the dichotomous cube' are decomposed in different ways to arrive at an additive, a multiplicative, and an exponential measure. The relative merits of these measures and their relation to traditional coeffici…
A Markovian Approach to Measures of Association
Starting with a time-continuous Markov process in aggregate equilibrium, transtion rates are decomposed into effect parameters and random shocks. If the geomatric mean is taken as a measure of the joint effect of the effect parameters, we arrive at the coefficient for an additive decomposition, and Yule's Y and Q for two-way and one-way multiplicative decompostions, respectively. A slightly diferent exponential decompositions into "tension levels…
