Faith Development at 30
Thirty years ago this summer Religious Education published its first article on faith development theory, entitled, “Agenda Toward a Developmental Perspective on Faith,” published in Religious Education in volume LXIX, March–April 1974, pp. 209–219. At the request of the editors of this journal, it is a privilege to offer an account of some of the author's present reflections on faith development research and theory.
Faith Development Theory and the Postmodern Challenges
Faith development theory (FDT) stands at the convergence of developmental psychologies and a tradition of liberal theology deriving from Christian origins. It took form through empirical research based on in-depth interviews with children and adults, initially conducted primarily in North America. Reich's contribution that the Oser/Gmunder approach provides a balance for the hard-soft distinction among theories of religious thinking is critiqued in three ways. First, hard and soft categories are seen to be obsolete in light of their dated use in debates with behaviorists and maturationists. Faith as a universal, dynamic quality of human meaning making can be defined in terms of each individual's center of values, images of power, and master stories. Faith develops in stages toward a point of maximal individuation of the self and corresponding minimization of the personal ego as the standpoint from which evaluations are made
