  • High-resolution carbonate isotope records of Holocene soil water balance and ecosystem dynamics in northern Iran loess

Open Access•Farhad Khormali, Neil Tabor et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

Stable carbon isotopes in Holocene soils provide key insights into past climate and ecosystems. This study presents high-resolution isotope analyses of pedogenic carbonates and organic carbon from modern loess-derived soils in northern Iran across a strong precipitation gradient (150–850 mm mean annual precipitation [MAP]). Eight soil profiles span five soil orders: Alfisols, Mollisols, Inceptisols, Aridisols, and Entisols. The mean δ 13 Cpc valu…

  • Piping Erosion in Semi‐Arid Loess Hillslope

Open Access•Mohsen Hosseinalizadeh, Mohammad Alinejad et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2026

Piping erosion, driven by subsurface flow, has generally received less attention than soil erosion caused by overland flow. This oversight contributes to the growing global problem of soil degradation in various regions. Piping erosion can pose significant geohazards in areas covered by loess, such as the Iranian Loess Plateau (ILP), where it negatively impacts agricultural productivity and human properties. Consequently, identifying the factors …

  • Paleopedogenesis and paleoclimatic changes recorded at the Khonako II loess section, Khovaling Loess Plateau, Southern Tajikistan

    Open Access•Faeze Talebi, Farhad Khormali et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2026•Referencias: 55

  • Structure and properties of paleosols of the last two interglacial cycles of the Khovaling Loess Plateau, Tajikistan (Obi–Mazar section)

    Open Access•O A Tokareva, М П Лебедева et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2025

Significant thicknesses, a large number of paleosols, and an impressive chronological framework place the loess–paleosol series of the Afghan-Tajik depression on a par with the famous sections of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Based on the results of field stratigraphy, description of the macro- and micromorphological structure, field magnetic susceptibility measurements, and study of the chemical and grain-size compositions, a comprehensive characte…

  • Influence of Na-feldspar grains within the K-feldspar fraction on sediments IRSL dating

Open Access•Dongxue Li, Hui Zhao et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2024

  • Geophysical sediment properties of a late Pleistocene loess–paleosol sequence, Chenarli, northeastern Iran

Open Access•Amin Ghafarpour, Farhad Khormali et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2023

We present stratigraphic, magnetic, diffuse reflectance spectrophotometric analyses, and chronologic data for the Chenarli loess–paleosol sequence in northeastern Iran. Eight loess units (LU) are identified, described, and constrained in time based on relative stratigraphy and luminescence dating from >130 ± 9.1 ka to ~9.8 ± 0.7 ka. Our data indicate that pedogenic magnetite/maghemite formation gives rise to magnetic enhancement in modern soil an…

Open Access•Amin Ghafarpour, Farhad Khormali et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

Loess accumulation and paleosol formation are important Quaternary geoarchives in northern Iran. Two loess-paleosol sequences at Mobarakabad and Aghband were examined using soil morphology and micromorphology, mineralogy, magnetic susceptibility (MS), free Fe oxides and calcium carbonate equivalent. The loess-paleosol sequences provide a record of changes in paleo-rainfall in the northern Iran. Micromorphological and MS differences between the lo…
