Enhancement of the measurement precision and interval-level scaling of the general self-efficacy scale (GSE) using rasch analysis
Rasch Analysis and Interval‐Level Scaling of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule ( Panas ) Across Cultures
Affective state investigation requires precise measurement that satisfies parametric statistical assumptions for reliable and valid cross‐data comparisons. The psychometric properties of the 20‐item Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) are satisfactory, but provide scores on an ordinal scale, which could be unsuitable for parametric statistics. The present study employed the Rasch model to assess the psychometric statistics of the PANAS,…
Multi-method cross-linguistic validation of the Activism and Radicalism Intention Scale for adolescents
The world is rapidly changing, and many societies face radicalization involving activism and sometimes violence. Adolescents are at increased risk of radicalization, yet validated scales to assess violent and non-violent radical intentions among youth are lacking. This study aimed to validate the Activism-Radicalism Intention Scale (ARIS) for use among French- and English-speaking adolescents (14–18 years) using data from 1,911 Canadian high scho…
Network analysis of mental health literacy
Internationally, research on mental health literacy (MHL) is increasing. However, the complex interplay between MHL components is not fully understood due to methodological limitations. We aimed to investigate the reciprocal links between beliefs, recognition ability and attitudes towards depression and schizophrenia in Ghana using the novel network analysis approach. A total of 410 participants from the general population of Ghana were included …
Establishing the Cross‐Cultural Validity of the Immune Status Questionnaire Using Rasch Analysis
Reliable assessment of self‐reported immune function is essential for identifying at‐risk populations, monitoring public health interventions and informing global health strategies. Yet, current instruments are imprecise and lack cross‐cultural validity. This study aimed to assess the cross‐cultural validity of the 7‐item Immune Status Questionnaire (ISQ). The Partial Credit Rasch model was applied to analyse responses to the ISQ ( N = 1250) from…
Enhancing the Precision of the Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R) across Germany, Ghana, India, and New Zealand Using Rasch Methodology
Accurately measuring life orientation (or continuum from optimism to pessimism) is essential for research focused on enhancing health and well-being. The psychometric statistics of the Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R) has been examined using Classical Test Theory (CTT). This method has been criticized for relying on the imprecise ordinal scores. We have employed the advance Rasch methodology to examine the psychometric statistics of the Revi…
Examining the unique contributions of Covid-19 infodemics to psychological distress in Ghana and New Zealand
Recent evidence on the lasting psychological impacts of COVID-19, including threats from new variants, highlights the need to examine factors driving psychological distress during the pandemic. We have identified the unique contributions of COVID-19 infodemics to psychological distress among the general population of New Zealand and Ghana. We sampled 936 (New Zealand: n = 413, Ghana: n = 523) respondents to participate in an online cross-sectiona…
A worldwide test of the predictive validity of ideal partner preference matching
10,358) across 43 countries and 22 languages to estimate preference-matching effect sizes. The most rigorous tests revealed significant preference-matching effects in the whole sample and for partnered and single participants separately. The "corrected pattern metric" that collapses across 35 traits revealed a zero-order effect of β = .19 and an effect of β = .11 when included alongside a normative preference-matching metric. Specific traits in t…
Cross-country assessment of the unique contributions of psychological factors to vaccination
We have identified the most relevant and significant psychological factors in relation to COVID-19 vaccination attitudes in Ghana, Germany, New Zealand and India. This study recruited 1822 participants from the general populations of India ( n = 411), New Zealand ( n = 413), Ghana ( n = 523) and Germany ( n = 475) to participate in a cross-sectional online survey. After controlling for the country of residence, individual psychological factors pl…
Psychometric properties of the motors of Covid-19 vaccination acceptance scale in New Zealand
High vaccination coverage plays an essential role in curbing epidemics and pandemics, making it important to have a country-specific valid and standardised instruments for assessing vaccination attitudes. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of the Motors of COVID-19 Vaccination Acceptance Scale (MoVac-COVID19S) in New Zealand. A total of 413 participants completed an online survey in June and July 2022, which included the MoVac…
Help-seeking for Social Anxiety symptoms in Ghana
While health research has demonstrated the influence of cultural disparities on health outcomes, the impact of ambivalent sexism on mental health help-seeking has not been well understood. We investigated the links between sexist attitudes, Mental Health Literacy (MHL), and sociodemographic variables regarding symptoms of Social Anxiety among Ghanaians. In 2021 , we recruited 601 Ghanaians to participate in an online vignette-based experimental s…
Mental health literacy for social phobia in Ghana
BACKGROUND: Mental health literacy (MHL) research has been of substantial interest internationally. Nevertheless, the interplay between beliefs, attitudes, previous experience with mental disorders, and knowledge of Ghanaians on specific mental disorders remains to be understood. The present study explored the interconnectedness between gender stereotypes, prejudice, previous experience with social phobia, and MHL among the general population in …
(In)Alienable Worth? Cultural Logics of Dignity, Honor, and Face and their Links to Prosociality Across the World
Cultural logic is a set of cultural scripts and patterns organized around a central theme. The cultural logics of dignity, honor, and face describe different ways of evaluating a person’s worth and maintaining cooperation. These cultural logics vary in prevalence across cultures. In this study, we collaboratively develop and validate a measure capturing these cultural logics, which will allow us to map world cultures based on the prevalence of th…
Beyond recognition
Research on the beliefs and attitudes regarding specific mental disorders in Ghana is limited. A vignette study was conducted to examine the relationship between causal attributions, help-seeking, and stigma towards depression and schizophrenia using lay Ghanaians (N = 410). This adapted questionnaire presented two unlabelled vignettes about a hypothetical person with the above disorders for participants to provide their impressions. Next, partic…
Mental health literacy in Ghana
Research on Mental Health Literacy (MHL) has been growing internationally. However, the beliefs and knowledge of Ghanaians about specific mental disorders have yet to be explored. This vignette study was conducted to explore the relationships between religiosity, education, stigmatization and MHL among Ghanaians using a sample of laypeople (N = 409). The adapted questionnaire presented two vignettes (depression and schizophrenia) about a hypothet…
