    This paper brings anthropological, sociological and geographical perspectives to bear on the problem of farm sustainability and, in particular, the legitimation of sustainable farm practices. It attempts to lay some theoretical foundations for explanation of the adoption of farming practices which may, or may not, promote sustainability.     The Scythian domination of Western Asia has for centuries been known from Herodotus’ mention, but other evidence for it emerged in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Assyrian records and letters mentioning the Ashguzai, as the Assyrians called the Scythians, were revealed in the nineteenth century when the geography and the ethnic names of the Assyrians’ world began to be properly understood from the decipherment of cuneiform texts.
