  • Hannah Arendt, David Rousset, and the Imagination of Living Death

    Michael Mcgillen•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2026

The figure of the living corpse stands at the center of Hannah Arendt’s analysis of the Nazi concentration camps. This article uncovers how Arendt’s understanding of living death was indebted to her reading and translations of David Rousset’s Les jours de notre mort (1947). Positioning Arendt as a secondary witness who sought to mediate survivor testimony to the unscathed, it shows how Rousset’s book was central to Arendt’s effort to inspire a fe…

  • Orientation in pictures

    Michael Mcgillen•ARTICLE•Word & Image•2020

This article applies insights from picture theory (W. J. T. Mitchell) and the psychology of perception (Ernst Gombrich) in order to examine Franz Kafka’s and Samuel Beckett’s use of multistable pictures in The Trial and Watt. It argues that these pictures—the portrait of a judge and the picture of a circle and displaced center—are significant not as objects of hermeneutical interpretation, but rather as sites where the conditions of spectatorship…

  • Historical Passages and Scenes of Transport in Uwe Johnson's Jahrestage

    Michael Mcgillen•ARTICLE•The Germanic Review Literature…•2018

This contribution explores the problem of a historical passage between the German past and the American present in Uwe Johnson's Jahrestage: Aus dem Leben von Gesine Cresspahl through an analysis of its scenes of transit and technologized movement. Reading Johnson's work in terms of the Freudian theory of trauma, it argues that Jahrestage registers traumatic experience not only in the challenge of remembering the past but also in the repetition o…

  • Erich Auerbach and the Seriality of the Figure

    Michael Mcgillen•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2018•Referencias: 18

The historiographical status of Erich Auerbach’s theory of figural interpretation, which he develops in “Figura” (1938) and Mimesis (1946), is complex. In its insistence on the fundamental historicity of its objects—of both the figure and its fulfillment—it carries forth the historicist paradigms of Giambattista Vico and G. W. F. Hegel, yet in its assertion of figural relations that traverse the historical continuum beyond historical causation, f…
