Causal analysis of H1N1pdm09 influenza infection risk in a household cohort
BACKGROUND: Obtaining a comprehensive quantitative figure of the determinants of influenza infection will help identify priority targets for future influenza mitigation interventions. We developed an original causal model integrating highly diverse factors and their dependencies, to identify the most critical determinants of pandemic influenza infection (H1N1pdm09) during the 2010-2011 influenza season. METHODS: We used data from 601 households (…
Integrative study of pandemic A/H1N1 influenza infections
The large amount of data collected throughout the follow-up will permit a multidisciplinary study of influenza infections. Additional data is being collected and analyzed in this ongoing cohort. The longitudinal analysis of these households will permit integrative analyses of complex phenomena such as individual, collective and environmental risk factors of infection, routes of transmission, or determinants of the immune response to infection or …
Factors in vaccination intention against the pandemic influenza A/H1N1
BACKGROUND: Vaccination against pandemic influenza A/H1N1 is an effective strategy to mitigate the spread of the disease. While the vaccine is now available, social acceptance remains relatively uncertain in many societies. The purpose of this study was to examine the beliefs, attitudes and practices associated with the intention to get vaccinated against the A/H1N1 virus among the general population in France. METHODS: A representative sample of…
Chikungunya on Réunion Island
Between March 2005 and May 2006, Réunion Island was hit by an epidemic of chikungunya which affected 260,000 people (38% of the island's population). Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted through mosquito bites for which there is no effective treatment. A socio-epidemiological survey was conducted in May 2006 on a representative sample of the population (N = 1,035) which aimed to identify the factors related to high probability of contaminat…

Risk Perception of the “Mad Cow Disease” in France
Since 1996, when bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) was assessed as a possible human transmissible disease, a variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), French people have entered into a long period of fear and avoidance of beef and bovine byproducts, which produced an unprecedented collapse in the beef market. This article deals with the perceived risk of the "mad cow disease" (MCD) in the French general population. Two surveys were conduc…
Scientist and public responses to BSE‐related risk
Social studies of risk repeatedly have found substantial divergences in the way that experts/scientists and members of the general public appraise risks associated with health and environmental hazards. However, empirical evidence for these differences remains controversial. A recent review of literature suggests in particular that divergences between experts and lay people may potentially result from confounding socio‐demographic factors. The pu…
GPs and the social amplification of BSE-related risk
Social studies of risk have consistently shown that physicians and health professionals are viewed by the general public as a trustworthy source of information and communication regarding risks. However, few if any empirical investigations have focused on the role physicians, particularly general practitioners (GPs), may play as a ‘social station’ in the processes of amplification or attenuation of risks to health that Kasperson et al described i…
French general practitioners didn't fear the millennium bug
A survey including 1358 French general practitioners was conducted in December 1999, to assess their own perception of the risks related to the millennium bug. Neither fear nor anxious behaviour was reported. Eighty-three per cent (558/671) didn't think that health risks were to be feared, as the millennium approached
