Sustainable care
The term ‘care crisis’ is invoked to denote chronic system failures and bad outcomes for the people involved. We present a comprehensive wellbeing framework and illustrate its practicality with evidence of negative outcomes for those who provide care. We find evidence of substantial material and relational wellbeing failures for family carers and for care workers, while there has been little interest in carers’ views of their ability to live the …

Older Workers and Care-Giving in England
This article considers recent changes in the incidence of caring among people aged 50-64 in England and the policy context in which these have occurred. After introducing the topic, research questions addressed and methods used, it outlines findings from other research on how older workers experience and manage caring roles. It then sets out relevant public policy developments since carers were first accorded rights to recognition and services in…
From Provider to Enabler of Care? Reconfiguring Local Authority Support for Older People and Carers in Leeds, 2008 to 2013
This article explores developments in the support available to older people and carers (i.e., caregivers) in the city of Leeds, United Kingdom, and examines provision changes during a period characterized by unprecedented resource constraint and new developments in national-local governance. Combining Paid Work and Family Care
As populations age around the world, increasing efforts are required from both families and governments to secure care and support for older and disabled people. At the same time both women and men are expected to increase and lengthen their participation in paid work, which makes combining caring and working a burning issue for social and employment policy and economic sustainability. International discussion about the reconciliation of work and …

Voice and choice for users and carers? Developments in patterns of care for older people in Australia, England and Finland
This article identifies key trends over the last 20 years in residential and community care for older people in England, Finland and Australia, investigating the extent of ‘de-institutionalisation’, ‘privatisation’ and ‘individualisation’. The concepts of collective and individual ‘voice’ and ‘choice’ are used to interrogate the roles of collective and individual actors, older people and carers, in influencing policy formulation. While these thre…
The international context
In ch. 1 the concept of detachment from the labour market was explored in relation to the UK. There we saw some of the limitations of conventional measures of unemployment and located the non-employed population in the context of the changing structure of the UK labour market.
Work to Welfare
This book provides a new perspective on joblessness among men. During the last twenty years vast numbers of men of working age have moved completely out of the labour market into 'early retirement' or 'long-term sickness' and to take on new roles in the household. These trends stand in stark contrast to rising labour market participation among women. Based on an unprecedented range of new research on the detached male workforce in the UK, and loc…

Gender Contracts, Welfare Systems and Non-Standard Working
This chapter reviews evidence relating to the extent and type of non-standard, or atypical, work being done in five European countries — Denmark, Germany, France, Italy and the UK, during the period 1985–95. Five countries were selected as the largest number which could be considered in one chapter, and to represent both a variety of labour market situations and a geographical spread. 'Non-standard' work is paid work which is neither full-time ac…
Work and Care in the Life Course
The article develops a case study of the family and work history of an interviewee which is used to illustrate the context in which family arrangements for work, care and support develop. The study uses Finch and Mason's (1993) focus on human agency to develop a 'family responsibilities account', and then goes on to explore three aspects of the social structural context in which the life has been lived. These are developed from Connell's analysis…
Women's Working Lives
Variation and Flexibility
The article draws on empirical data to demonstrate that, within the confines of traditionally `female' jobs, women's experience of employment tends to be varied, both as regards type and organization of employment. The flexible approach which this experience indicates is confirmed by further data collected during personal interviews. Explanations for the characteristics are considered, as are their likely effects. The respondents' employment beha…
