  • The Potential to Reconstruct 20th Century Soil Organic Carbon Erosion in Rangelands From Small Reservoir Sediments

Open Access•Lu Li, Juliane Krenz et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2024

Soil erosion and soil organic carbon (SOC) loss are not always linked linearly because SOC‐rich topsoil is eroded at the initial stages of degradation, while horizons with lower SOC content are eroded later, but often at higher rates. Small, silted‐up farm reservoirs potentially document this change during the period of sediment accumulation. This study tests the specific potential of small farm reservoir sediments from the South African Karoo to…

  • Effects of conservation practices on global wind erosion control

Open Access•Liangang Xiao, Zengtao You et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2023

Wind erosion represents one of the major land degradation forms that significantly threatens sustainable development across the globe. A series of conservation practices have been widely developed and tested in order to effectively reduce wind erosion rates in non‐irrigated dry and semi‐dry lands. However, a comprehensive investigation regarding the efficacy of conservation practices and potential impacting factors on erosion control at the globa…

  • Anthropogenic erosion-induced small-scale soil heterogeneity in South African rangelands

    Open Access•Juliane Krenz, P Greenwood et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropocene•2021•Referencias: 56

Land-use-induced soil erosion in semi-arid drylands induced by land-use changes creates patchworks of soils and vegetation different from those of natural conditions. Knowledge of the highly dynamic spatial heterogeneity in soil properties, not depicted in conventional soil maps, is important for managing land uses sustainably, and for understanding soil-climate interactions. This study carries out analysis of soil redistribution in a degraded ra…

  • The use of a raindrop aggregate destruction device to evaluate sediment and soil organic carbon transport

Open Access•Li Xiao, Yaxian Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2015

Raindrop impact and subsequent aggregate breakdown can potentially change the movement behaviour of soil fractions and thus alter their transport distances when compared against non-impacted aggregates. In a given water layer, the transport distances of eroded soil fractions, and thus that of the associated substances across landscapes, such as soil organic carbon (SOC) and phosphorous, are determined by the settling velocities of the eroded soil…

  • The influence of terracettes on the surface hydrology of steep-sloping and subalpine environments

Open Access•P Greenwood, Samuel Kuonen et al.•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2015

Alpine and mountain slopes represent important pathways that link high-altitude grazing areas to meadows and rangelands at lower elevations. Given the often acute gradients associated with such environments, they potentially represent highly efficient runoff conveyance routes that facilitate the downslope movement of runoff and associated material during erosion events. Many such slopes host series of small steps, or "terracettes". The juxtaposit…

  • Safeguarding Cyborg Childhoods

Corinne May-Chahal, Claire Mason et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Social Work•2014•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 12

Child protection social work's current concern remains largely with offline harm and injury and separate from the focus on child protection in relation to risks online and children's use of computer-mediated communication and the internet. This paper draws on original research reporting children's methods for assessing who they are talking to online, as part of a wider study designed to develop software tools for improved online child safety. It …

  • Late bronze age hoards from the Chelmer valley, Essex

    Open Access•D G Buckley, N Brown et al.•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•1986•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 1

Details of a recently discovered Ewart Park phase hoard from Boreham, Essex are reported. The opportunity is also taken to publish Late Bronze Age metal finds from Boreham, together with a hoard discovered in the nineteenth century at Little Baddow. These finds are viewed in the light of recent fieldwork and previous finds in the Chelmer Valley
